SCAMMER ALERT!

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Scammers are stealing money from WTB ad posters on a number of outdoor or hunting-related forums right now.
Here's how it works:
You post a WTB ad for, say, bullets. You get a PM or "conversation" from someone saying something like, "Hey, I know a guy who has some of those to sell. Drop him an email at xxx@gmail.com or text him at 1-541 xxx-xxxx." You send a text or e-mail and yes, Ed Schimmelpetscher says he has what you are looking for. You Paypal him and he walks with your money. No bullets, no replies to your inquiries. Nothing. You have been had.
This just happened to me here with a WTB Speer .458 300-grain JHP bullets in the hunting classifieds on my Oregon hunting/fishing forum.
A guy PMed me that a friend had some and I sent an email. We agreed on price, I Paypaled him $90, and he walked off with it, laughing at me. When I went back to ask the forum member what he knew about this crook, I realized that he had joined the forum just two days prior and had 0 posts. SIRENS SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF.
Since being cheated, I have had another shady offer to text a friend by another guy who joined the forum two days before.
Friends, just watch your topknots and ignore or report any of this stuff, especially involving brand-new posters you never heard of.

Blaine, they are finding members of the shooting community easy targets as so many of us are scrambling for components right now. I confess to holding un-Christian thoughts about these folks.

Bummer Bill! Scary dealing with people, and unless they use regular Paypal and not "friends and family" that's for people I trust, I wont deal with strangers. If I use regular Paypal, and pay the extra, then it goes sideways, Paypal will refund your money and go after them.
You might still try contacting your credit card company, as they might refund your money anyway.

Old Savage and myself are zapping spammers/scammers everyday on Leverguns and even more are being automatically zapped. Some are porn sites some are firearm related.
Take a look at the members list starting at the highest number 207 you will be amazed at how many spammers try to log on each day... been like for months.

I wouldn't give my next door neighbor $5 before hand....people made me that way. If it was something you really wanted and the people sounded OK just tell them because of all the scamming going on for them to give you their name, telephone number and address and after you check them out you'll send the bucks......you will see how fast they drop you like a box of hot rocks.

You want to see real scammers on a large scale....go answer an ad for a dog for sale.

You know why this is all going on? Because there are no consequences and the low life's know that the cops have other things to worry about. A person with a house, car, and a phone that matches their address is a better bet of being honest. If they don't have these things..oh well...see ya.

gamekeeper is right, daily exercise to eliminate scammers trying gain entry. The PM angle is not something that comes through us.

Beware and best to deal with the folks we know here. Let the buyer beware.

My daughter got bit for $300 on a deposit for a DOG. I told her it didn't sound legit, but she assured me she had done her homework and was using an APP that she could file a complaint on if she got scammed. She filed the complaint but they have not done anything to recoup her loses yet. I told her if that is the last time she loses money like that she will be LUCKY. It is a shame that this new digital world is so easy for crooks to exploit. Levergunners is one of the few exceptions where it seems we keep a pretty clean house from rif-raf!

A big thank you to the good folks here, and a tip of the foreign service helmet to Old Savage and Gamekeeper for "doing the Lord's work" against scammers and spammers.

I think Sixgun is exactly right. I hate a thief, always have. Probably got that from my dad, who hates thieves. We worked too hard for what we have to see it stolen from us.

This has been going on for years across the net , I quit posting WTB adds long ago . Most of the forums now you have to have 30 or more meaningful posts before even being able to view listing boards.

I've even seen some forums if a new member joins and makes a bunch of quick posts to try to get in to WTB WTT OR WTS listings they either ban or remove these posts so they cannot access.

People also are using Google images to use for pictures of fake adds.

Be careful out there!!

I'm a moderator on a car forum and I can tell you that certain IP addresses are automatically set aside for "approval" of posts if the IP address is in certain countries. And once I look at them to decide if they're appropriate to allow the post, in 99.9% of the cases I delete the post, and ban the user.
I only wish that as a moderator their application to join the site had some verification process, before they made the first post. So many would never get to the point of trying to make the first scam post!
