any quickload guys- 44 special

Post by mickbr »

Fellas was wondering what the typical exit/muzzle pressures are for 44 special in a lever action. say a typical 5.5-6 grain load of some fast burning powder back of a 200 grain bullet and a 24" barrel. Was dicussing with non-firearms owning friends the difference in blast between low powered pistol carbines and full powered bottleneck cartridges. Not sure how hard this data is to run, but if anyone was interested thanks in advance.

Here's what QL has to say about it, mickbr:

200 grain RCBS RFN, 6 grains Bullseye, 44 spcl cartridge
24" bbl: 10K psi chamber; 616 psi muzzle; 1190 fps
5" bbl: 10K psi chamber; 3930 psi muzzle; 834 fps

200 grain RCBS RFN, 16 grains 2400, 44 spcl cartridge
24" bbl: 14K psi chamber; 1284 psi muzzle; 1575 fps
5" bbl: 14K psi chamber; 6311 psi muzzle; 1000 fps

170 grain Sierra FN, 30 grains 3031; 30/30 cartridge
24" bbl: 40K psi chamber; 5063 psi muzzle; 2260 fps

earlmck, thanks very much for all that. Only 616psi from the 24" barrel, over 8x less than the 30-30 load! And the quickload velocity matches closely what I know I fella is getting from a 24" lever with 6 grains of BE incidentally. Precise program.
