Pen and paper along with a little knowledge of the language to record life with a simple eloquence to record incidents in time have given inspiration and hope to millions.

I would certainly develop a flinch at that load.

I enjoyed reading this.

Can't help but feel regret at the vivid description of one of these animals expiring.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I recall that as a young child, I got hold of an ancient Herter's Catalog that had "Black Powder Trade Rifles". IIRC, they were 2 bore, and sold for about 20 bucks.
Now, I understand much better.

i bought one of those, that had been sold by Dixie Gun works, made in belgium. i never got up the nerve to shoot it with a proper charge. the barrel looked kinda thin and if it gave out, my head would have likely gone with it. i think i paid about 80$ and then took it to a gunshow where someone gave me 200$ for it.

Wow, an impala took a 4 bore full length and still ran 100 yd, and even then needed to be finished off.

Amazing ballistics, and you can't hunt animals that big without some degree of courage, let alone skill.

I am still amazed at how MANY they would kill, as if they had no clue that the herd needs to replace the dead ones to survive. Evidently biology and population dynamics weren't a "thing" back then... :|

I tend to hunt for food, or if a species is truly overpopulated and damaging the environment, I'll eliminate them as 'pests', but the element of simply seeing how big an animal one can take as a 'challenge' seems to be the dominant motivation here, rather than simply obtaining food or doing any kind of pest control. Thankfully I think that mindset has began to fade from the scene.
