browning vs Henry and a winchester ??

Post by daven »

hey folks...
may have already been covered here.... but tbh I'm lazy...

I have an FN browning blr in 308 ... I like it so well that I sold everything else I had except a double barrel 12 ga and a winchester 22 pump...
I want a lever action 22 lr... planning on new because I don't want to take a chance on getting someone else's headache...
have (had) narrowed down to a Henry or a browning bl 22.
price is within 50 bucks.
browning is ready for pick up... the Henry up to a year delivery time...
question here is (actually 2)...
which is the best rifle
and... is a Henry worth the wait ?

and what changed my have to a had.....
I ran across a Winchester 255 22 lever action... for a real cheap price I think..

any experience with these?

appreciate any advice... don't sugarcoat anything...
I'm in Germany ... I guess the reason for the high price Henry.... and lever guns aren't real popular (as popular )...
thanks for any tips....

Welcome to the forum...!

All I have in 22LR is a couple Ruger 96’s and my son’s Henry I borrow sometimes, so I can’t answer except to say I love the slick smooth Henry.

However, the tipping-bolt Rugers are even smoother, plus one is integrally suppressed.

From a leverguns-are-scarce standpoint I might just want to get whichever I could lay my hands on first then keep saving up towards a ‘better’ one and trade-up later if needed. That means Winchester vs Browning. I’m betting either would be fine but folks here who actually have owned them will soon chime in.

Here’s a thread on the 255 from here - https://www.levergunscommunity.org/view ... =1&t=64178

While I'm not crazy about the big bore Henrys as they always feel too heavy , last year I picked up a Henry youth model .22 so the grandkids have something to shoot. that little rifle is all I could ask for and there is really something to be said for Henrys customer service . I sent them an e-mail and it was answered promptly .Good Luck.

I wouldn't wait. Get the Browning. It's a fine little lightweight rifle

The Henry was the least expensive in the US when it competed with Marlin, browning and Winchester. They seemed to have gone up since Walmart has drastically curtained there gun sales. There are all very good but I'd rather have any of the latter for similar money. I wish I had bought a Marlin centennial back when used ones were cheap.

If I can ever wear out my Winchester 9422 I will buy a Henry carbine to replace it. Oh, and welcome to the fire.... :D

I would get the Browning but really prefer the old Marlins and Wincher 9422s. My dad has a Henry brass frame 22 that shoots fine but is a bit heavy.

I have the Henry 22 carbine and a Browning 22 with delux wood and engraving. The Browning has great eye appeal but the Henry will out shoot it accuracy wise. The Browning has a horrible trigger but the short throw lever is nice. The Browning was $770, the Henry $330. The Henry gets to the woods a lot more because of how it carries and how accurate it is.

Given the choice I would take the Browning. I've had two Henrys 22's over the years. There very accurate and the trigger is pretty good right out of the box. The only gripe I have about the Browning 22's is the trigger is pretty heavy! I like the Marlin 39 and the Winchester 9422 over any lever action in 22 cal. You wont find any for sale these days! Good luck whatever you choose. There both good rimfire.

I just bought another 9422. They pop up now and again but they are expensive. They feed better than any of the other.22 leverguns. I especially like this one because it has a great pistol grip stock, half magazine, and its chambered in .22Magum.

If I didn't already have a nice 9422, and 9422M, I'd get a Henry Youth .22 lever....the youth model fits me perfectly, especially if I'm wearing a coat.
If you want to spend more, you can't beat a 9422.

I have the Henry. Nothing at all wrong with it. If it would be available, I would highly recommend it. I cannot say about the other two.

....hard to feed 'better' than a 96/22LR or 96/22WRM or 96/17HMR, with their great rotary magazines....

But I have to admit, the Ruger 96's are NOT 'traditional' leverguns in appearance. Probably also not very available overseas. Still, I wouldn't part with mine (I have a 22 LR 'plain', a 22 LR integrally-suppressed, and a 22 WRM that is 'original', plus another 22 WRM I spent another $95 or so on and turned into a 17 HMR that is a tack-driver 9-shot rotary-magazine levergun...

I wish I had bought a Ruger 96 when they were available. Every one I have handled seemed to be really slick.
