Something I made for my dad's 80th..

Post by 2ndovc »

My dad retired at 62, gave me the keys to the business and sailed off to the Caribbean.

He left Lake Erie, made his way through the Erie Barge Canal and down the east coast. He spent several years exploring the islands and made it as far south as Trinidad and Tobago.
While they were outfitting the boat for extended cruising he gave me a box of stuff they weren't going to need. In that box was a teak door for a storage bin in the cabin that was turned into something else. I lost track of the box for several years, due to Blondie's constant struggle to "organize" me when I came across it a couple months ago. I rounded up the hardware, some red mahogany ( teak is a bloody fortune around here) a little brass plaque, a bottle of rum and set of copper and brass shot glasses. Fun project, I wish I had a few more of those doors.

I started with a couple of Blondie's Waterford glasses, but she wasn't about to let those go. :D

The boat is a Tartan 37, made for cruising but also a fast performer.

I caught up to him when he made it to Puerto Rico. I sat on the back deck, read and fished for a week. A very nice quiet little bay on the West end of the Island.

Took some great pictures too.
Imagine ( the name is a long story, has nothing to do w/ the song)

Boat anchored near by.

I was going to display a couple of his Russian Contract 1911s in there but thought the rum was more fitting. :D

Thanks for the nice words guys! I'll have to take his word on the rum though, haven't had a drink in six years. I thought it was a cool bottle.

Nothing wrong with that. Not every item needs to be used for more than a decorative item used to remember and honor someone special.
