My Christmas Present To Me

Post by Shrapnel »

You can never have too many Winchesters, although I have tried to back off on getting any more. When I saw this one, I broke the rule and had to have this beauty in 45-70...

A gun like that clearly needs a good home - a place where it will be treated well and allowed to age gracefully. Glad you rescued it from what could have been an awful fate...

I'd break all sorts of rules for a rifle like that! What a nice combination of special order features and killer wood! Very nice find.

you have outdone yourself !! and considering your collection, that's saying a lot.

that is exquisite ! my favorite rifle, in my favorite caliber, in my favorite configuration, and in unreal condition.

that would just cap my collection forever.... and of course I bet it shoots as good as it looks.

great Christmas present. love to see that someday. haven't been down there since this covid stuff started, but getting the first shot of vaccine this coming Monday, and hopefully getting down that way for a couple of weeks in march

well, anyway, congratulations ! it is a treat to see this.

That rifle looks to be close to one that's for sale on the internet. I'd love to buy it but I would have to remortgage the house to buy it. Your a lucky guy.

What’s the double rifle you plunked the mulie doe with ? Looks a lot like an E.M. Reilly 450-400 BPE we have at the shop for sale ! Correct me if I’m wrong but your bird getter appears to be a Colt I assume in 10 or 12 gauge ?

That picture was taken with an original 1876 in 45-75. I used the rifle as a prop only as I killed the moose with a 300 Weatherby. Believe me, I wanted to shoot it with the 1876, but conditions and timing weren't compatible with the circumstances with the killing of that moose. I shot my first moose with an original 1876 deluxe and this picture was just for comparison as it shows how big that moose really is...

The rifle is a Henry Clarke 7X57R, a nice round for big game hunting in Montana. One of the bird getters I used this fall is a Colt 1878 in 12 gauge. I also shot a few with a Webley and George Daw, all in short chambered 12 gauge...

Great pics, great firearms.

What is the little wooden knob in the muzzle of the '86? You didn't leave the cleaning rod in did you?

I believe it is for storing the rifle in a safe with a slide that allows you to put rifles with different length barrels and the dowel will keep the gun upright as it will stick down into the bore and the knob slides into a bracket like wine glasses that are stored by the stem.

That is just my guess...

I believe those wooden plugs are for storing the firearm bbl down so the oil doesn't run back into the the stock and soak it. I have my granddads Ithaca 37 and it has a similar wood plug. Nice rifle and those grouse will eat pretty good. I use 410 or 22 usually catch them along the road in the snow berries. danny
