My Dad was a Pennzoil man. I have used and thrown away a bunch of those yellow cans. Back at age 13 when I took Drivers Education in the Summer, Dad made me learn to check the oil and how to change it. I used a screwdriver to punch a hole in the top of the can. Bigger hole on one part of the lid for oil to come out and tiny nick on the other part to let air in. I learned to pour it that way with minimal spills. When I got my To-And-From school and work license on my 14th Birthday, I was already capable of doing my own oil changes.
Dad used to have some plastic lids sized just right for those cans. Perfect to store the oil that you used in your push mower.

I never had a Harley that didn`t leak until i got out of the 70`s.
Piller i knew a guy that worked in a gas station that would turn a used can upside down on a empty can, didn`t take long before he had a free can off oil.
Bet there isn`t many here that remember the quart glass bottles including me.

My Dad does, but he was born in 1929. I never saw one in use. He used to have one someplace. It probably has spare nuts, bolts, or washers of assorted sizes and types in it.

That's a neat trick 8) I use a fair bit of chain oil in my saw and it's so thick a lot gets wasted.

All this old gas station stuff is getting collectable, if we only new and collected a few thousand oil cans for free most likely. :)
I have a couple old glass bottles with spouts coming i`ll pot pics if they ever get here, i bought them on ebay on the 11th from Florida and track says they are still in Florida
Also some may not know that the oil tank measures out exactly one quart of oil, ya turn it backwards until it stops then the other way until it stops equals one quart.

At 70 yrs. old, I'm old enough to have worked at an Atlantic Richfield station in the 60's that actually had one of those pumps in use! We also had the fill cans with a pivoting spout that you pumped the oil into, then went to the car and pivoted the spout down to allow the oil to fill the engine.
I've got no room for one of these cool oil tank/pumps in my shop, but would love to find one of those old fill cans to clean up and display.

Very cool Lenn!
A family friend owned a Mobil business for decades. We worked in his gas station when we were kids. He had a metal rack that held a six pack of those glass bottles. It was nice.
My neighbor has had antique cars and everything to go with them for many, many years. He has tons of old signs and anything automotive. His son does the same. Must be a million dollars in that garage. Cool stuff!

Haha yeah. I think of all the stuff even I have thrown out. I still do have a bunch of stuff over in the back garage. Maybe my grandkids will be glad I didn't throw it! :D

Growing up in Daytona Beach (Ormond By the Sea technically) Florida my father had a Texaco Station/Mechanic/Welding Business. I wonder how many of those quart (later some gallon) oil cans I spouted ? The big square tank held kerosene in our place. The place was on A1A with the beach literally across the road, the water 300 yards or so from the gas pumps. Dad also developed a 25 acre trailer part (RV park today) behind the station. It's all gone now , an empty lot developing into a subdivision. Below is the place in 1950. By the way the tower on the beach was built WW2 to look for submarines. It was deeded over to Dad after the war and still stands today. Just reminiscing.Oh well

Thanks and cool stories guys, i grew up in a small town of 300 some people and there were three small stations a Texaco, Standard don`t remember what the other brands were.
They were all small buildings the Texaco was the hang out, we would go there for a coke and candy bar from some cool machines which are now also collectable.
Better days for sure. :)

Thanks Pitchy. I've checked Ebay, but maybe I'm not using the correct search words? I see lots of neat old oil cans that bottom pour, or have flexible spouts that are pulled down to allow them to pour. But couldn't find any that have the swivel spout you swing down to begin pouring. I think the one we had at the station was a one gallon size, but if I found the same or smaller I'd consider either.

That's cool. My grandfather had one similar to that on the farm, along with a couple of old Texaco gas pumps.

I worked PT in an old Sinclair station and the propritor had a rack made on which we would lay the empty oil cans on their side and thw oil would drain out and run down the troughs into a 2 gal can. When the steek cans went to paper didnt get as much cause they drained better.Had a 6 pack carrier for quart glass oil gars with a straight spout on ea.Think wetied the to a fence rail and .22 lr them ..

I got the lid off that big can and it's still got oil in it. When the jobber truck came by that can is what the bulk oil came in. We poured that into the lubster.
