First blood with 300 savage

Post by FLINT »

With me behind the trigger anyways.

This was about a week and a half ago during our super short two week firearms deer season. Distance was about 60 yards, maybe a little more. Ammo was winchester factory 150gr. powerpoint. At the shot, the doe instantly crumbled and was lights out dead, not a single twitch or anything. I really really really like this gun.

Nice going Flint......those deer always look so much better before the yuck comes out of them...

What'd you do....cover up the bullet hole with the Savage? :D

You know what it's time for now.......give the mighty 250-3000 a work out on the next deer.----6

Yeah, the bullet hole on the other side was more obvious. The hole on the side showing is in front of the shoulder in that shadow area.

oh and yes! I just loaded up some 250-3000s tonight. 87 grain Sierra SPT(wanted the Speer hot cor but it's unobtanium right now) over several increments of 3031

I love the .250 Savage for deer -- it's now my go-to round... In a Savage 99 of course!

It's the first gun where I ever saw the bullet "hit the hair" I was aiming at through the scope -- which was pretty cool.

(My Dad taught us boys that trick -- don't just "shoot at the deer" -- pick a hair on it in the right spot and aim for that. I guess that was his version of "Aim small, miss small"...)

Congrats for a nice deer -- and a nice rifle!

Congratulations on the deer. I have a 300 that looks almost just like that including the scope.

I always loved the 250-3000 but just got rid of mine a couple months ago. They are great for deer with the right bullet. Many years ago one of my Uncles was coming in from work and shot a little mule deer with his. Only problem was he had a varmit bullet in it. Asked me to cut the deer up for him. He completely destroyed both front shoulders, the neck, half the back straps and part of one rear ham. It was brutal.

Sort of an old gun, old caliber, and old powder. It still worked perfectly. Nice deer. Hope you enjoy every bite.

Flint,
If you're interested I've an unopened box of the Speer 87gr Hot Core slug, 7 more in an opened box and a opened box of Sierra 90gr boattails, which were excellent performers in my 99. I no longer need them because my Savage Light Weight Hunter handles 100 gr slugs OK and 117gr slugs very well. Let me know if you're interested.

Nice job! Nothing like dropping them with a classic lever.

Nice! I shot a 7 point this year with the 250 Savage at 80 yards and it dropped on the spot. I used the Speer 100 grain with Varget at a little more than 2800 FPS. First deer kill with the 250 Savage.

You are correct that Speer bullets are very hard to find this year. The basic Speer Hot core bullets perform great at Levergun velocities. They are my go to for many of my hunting rounds.

Congrats! I shot my first buck with a 300 Savage on the first day of PA buck season in 1977 with Remington factory Core-Lokt ammo--not sure if it was 150 or 180 grain. The spike was under 50 yards and shot once through the lungs. He ran about 100 yards before dropping. My rifle is a 1940s era Model 99 is in the same configuration as yours except this one is a TD version. It's been in our family since it was new and has shot a lot of deer and one bear. It belonged to my uncle till he died in 1988. Then it was passsed on to me. As a matter of fact, I shot my second buck with it too and an additional button buck in doe season in 1978.

I'm suprised that cartidge is still working on todays deer, it's well know only a magnum of the recent flavor will perform on the mega deer of today.
