Guerilla Ballistics.....

Post by Ray »

I was showing an old friend of the family my 1911 officer's model sized .22tcm9r.....
https://www.levergunscommunity.org/view ... 23#p870823
.....while explaining to him the "how" and "why" of the cartridge.

Holding the magazine in such a way that he can examine the top round, he grunts and mumbles something indecipherable and proceeds to empty the cartridges from magazine with his right thumb into/onto his left palm and slips all eight into a breast pocket. He is quite a character so I thought he was just larking. In fullness of time the expected goodbyes are muttered and he leaves without returning my .22tcm9r cartridges.....

Some months later I am minding my own business pumping petrol when a codger in a m.a.g.a. mask suprises the snot out of me....."Here !" he says, holding a clenched fist out towards me. It takes me a few seconds to recognize him before I hold out a palm and he drops what looks to be four nickled 9mm largo cases in my hand......"you know how hard it is to find .221 fireballs......them work just fine and I still got four left."

That scoundrel had fired 4 .22tcm9r in his old remington, ironing themselves out-straight in the chamber !

2020 has been "a long strange trip" to quote robert hunter and bobby weir !

Before its all said and done, there may be quite a lot of cartridge improvisation and substitutions.....

If there were not people who do things such as he did, quite a few calibers might not have been invented. I know your friend didn't invent the .221 fireball, but he figured out a way to make it work.

I can only assume that the extractor held them back against the force of the firing pin blow.....Some folks say they shoot .40s in their 10mm.....I once ran a magazine full of .45 g.a.p. through my .45 acp shield and the fired and fed just fine.....

I’ve had a few friends who are cartridge collectors, so I have resigned myself to not having a full lot of brass even initially, if I get something in a new or odd chambering.

FYI- 444 Marlin cases WILL split (three out of three times) if fires in a Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun...

(...I wondered why the 25-yard groups were so lousy.... But hey, both guns said “Marlin” on them so it should be ok, right...?)

I did something like that once. .45 Colt will fire and extract in a .480 Ruger, but accuracy is lousy and the cases split.

Just like a .22 LR will fire in a .22 Mag. even though the case splits.
