Cool vintage carpet sweepers

Post by Pitchy »

Picked up a few of these carpet sweepers, pretty cool machines that still work after over 100 years. :D
The two longer ones have three bellows in them and have vacuum.

I have used the ones which just use brushes. They are fine for light work. I had never heard of the ones which make a vacuum using bellows. Pretty ingenious.

I have a modern electric one, works great... I remember an old lady had one of those ancient sweepers when I was a kid, that one seemed to work ok too.

I remember an aunt using one on the rugs in their home -- an old Craftsman-style house on Queen Anne Street in Medford, Oregon, late 1950s.

Thanks guys, i just took one apart to see what the bellows look like here`s a picture.
I don`t think the vacuum was very good when new but may have removed some of the dust, the dust went into the white bag and the other stuff went in the black containers each side of the roller that could be emptied by pushing a button.

Memories, My parents had one like those pictured above on the Right and/or Center. That was the first, I used on an area living room rug. Then my father got and old electric torpedo on wheels. The next one was the fancy Hoover floating ball after wall to wall carpeting was installed. Memories my 1950's and 60's.

Pitchy, thanks for sharing all your old finds and what your talents have created. Still enjoy your steam engine trains and outside track from years back.
