Loading 325 grain cast bullets in 45-70

Post by Bridger »

I bought a hundred 325 grain hard cast gas check flat point bullets from GT bullets. Only problem is, I realized after I bought them I don’t have any data for 325 grain cast in either of my loading manuals. I thought I did but I don’t....and the only stuff I can find on the internet is for the Leverlution or whatever it is bullet. Seems like 325 grains is kind of an odd ball. Rifle is a Winchester (Miroku) 86 Extra Light.

Any load suggestions? Also, what is the best manual for cast bullet loads, as I seem to be loading mostly cast as of late.

Thanks!

Yes, I loaded some for my 45-90 some years ago.
I will check my loads log tomorrow.

Your rifle is the strongest 1886 ever made....just use any data for the 300 grain bullet that's listed for the original 1886 Winchester. Those listed for the original 1886 are mid range loads and with the heavier 25 grains you will be using there will more than a margin of error with your rifle. If it makes you feel better just drop 2 grains from the max load.-----006

I load a 325 grain gas checked bullet for a couple of my rifles and I really like 34 grains of AA 5744 for my Browning (Miroku) SRC. Not position sensitive either.

I use either 13 grains Unique or 54 grains of 3031 under the 330 grain Gould in Starline cases WLP primers. Win Miroku 86 EL 45/70
The 3031 is pretty warm, maybe start a couple of grains lower.
Kind regards,
Tycer

As to what manual to get, I recommend Lyman cast bullet hand book. What are you looking to do with the loaded ammo? Accuracy? Hunting? Plinking? Large bears/moose? Soft recoil?
If I have a general idea of what you want to do I might be able to help better. I load from heavy cast subsonic all the way to make your eyeballs fuzzy in 45/70. Tom

Thanks guys! I knew you’d have something for me!

My purpose is mostly punching holes in cans, scrap lumber, etc so accuracy doesn’t have to be great, and it doesn’t have to be super powerful, nor do I want pipsqueak loads. Just something to duplicate the power level of something off the shelf from one of the Big 3.
