When I was living in Africa, there was a saying going around:

Q - What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages?
A - Tri-Lingual

Q - What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages?
A - Bi-Lingual

Q - What do you call a person who speaks 1 language?
A - American

I am fluent in 2 languages, but I only speak one. The other one is French based and is not spoken. My Spanish is pretty much limited to explaining your medicine. My Mandrin is limited to getting a date. My Hangul-Ma is limited. My Swedish is limited to a single insult.

I picked up some lingo in places I worked. Tetum in Timor Leste, which is pigin portugeuse, Dari, ( a persian dialect) and Pashtun, the two main languages in Afghanistan and also little french in Africa. Only had time to get very basic in each one, not conversational level, and you forget it as soon as you are no longer in that country using it.

I was capable of communicating the most important (at the time) needs in 8 languages. American, English (yes they are different), Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Thai & Vietnamese.

I could obtain alcohol, and female companionship. Which everyone knows is all a GI needs foreign language skills for. Since my discharge I only speak one language, American. If you are here and can't speak it that's your problem, not mine. My standard response to folks who try to speak to me in another language is to simply walk away.

First time I visited the Philippines most of my wife’s family were embarrassed they didn’t speak English very well . They read it and wrote it just fine but they never talked in English much . I told them I should be the one embarrassed I was in their country and knew nothing of their language . After 12 years I know maybe thirty words of bisayan (one of the dialects spoken in the Philippines).
