I have been quite interested in the Mossberg 646 since it came on the market, I know there were a few teething problems at first but Mossberg seem to have that sorted.
If I ever buy another 30/30 I might be tempted....

A .30-30 is a good rifle/cartridge combination for deer and hogs at short range to about 200 yards. It is one of those combinations which may not be perfect for any 1 particular set of variables, but it works well on a large range of variables. If you ever get the opportunity to come hunt in Texas, let us know. We should be able to find you some hog hunting to add to your fun. A .30-30 works for that. Of course, you will find a bunch of other calibers used just for the fun of it.

I just checked UK availability £499.99 or $640 American for the standard model but I kinda like the Brush Gun with the 16.25 barrel and fiber optic sights. I haven't seen that model over here but I did see the Tactical model in one small gunshop. If I do decide to get one I have quite a hurdle and hoops to jump through first..

With those 2 rifles you would be well covered for most game on this Continent. Of course, that is not news to you. The M14 was long gone by the time I was in, but the M60 was still the primary infantry platoon machine gun. I learned to like and respect the 7.62 NATO from using the M60. I had never fired any centerfire rifle cartridge other than a .220 Swift before basic training.
