AR-50 UPDATE

Post by Grizz »

first, a caveat; the only lever I found on the AR is the little bolt release thingy, perhaps not sufficient for the purists......

i took the untested pistol upper to the woods with a variety of 50 Beo ammo.this is the load for the first shots

i set this cylinder on the ground at a (tape)measured 80'5". approximately 27 yards.
this is the first shot from a standing off-hand position. i be keeping this one on a shelf.

the next two worked out to be a smile for the first one . . .

and here is the completely pertinent and useful cross comparison data

naturally, your mileage may vary

If it uses gunpowder and lead. I wanna hear yer range report about it.....
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I have a carbine-length .458 SOCOM upper that does an impressive job as well.

That sounds pretty good. 350 grains and over 2000 foot pounds of energy. I am not volunteering to go catch the bullets for you. You need someone braver than me to do that.

Bill my brother uses 458 Socom for pigs. With the lack of doves, we'll probably hunt pigs instead, I'd rather bass fish than hunt pigs 8)

Too hot to hunt pigs. They will taste terrible right now.

I thought seriously about that caliber. The big attraction for me is that my 45/70 bullets will fit.

But then I thought, when am I ever going to be able to play with a 50 anything, and threw caution to the wind. sorta :)

that bullet is impressive in gel tests, doesn't seem to disintegrate. I plan to load it down closer to sub-sonic, find the spot where it cycles the action reliably, and keep it in the house for home duty. that bullet won't have to move very fast to sever the spinal column of marauding dogs, eh?

my hunting load will be something like about 440 or 475ish at around 1450 if I can get it there.

I ran some 600 grain projectiles through my 50B when i was still playing with that round. It was VERY impressive. The bear i shot with it dropped like he had been hit by a bolt of lightning.

Thanks for mentioning that.

Really? How is that possible, didn't it lead the barrel and didn't that flat nose bullet bounce off?[/jokes]

I have some samples of Matt's in that weight range. Do you have any load data and velocity info? You could pm me if you don't want to publish here.

Are you over the 50 now? Or still using it. I tend to work out one load for a gun and stop messing with it.
That way I will "need" a different gun for the "other" load. ARs are a contributing factor.

Sadly no. That was years ago when the 50B first came out. I dont believe i still have any data in it but will check my load books. It was fearsome. I ended using an H3 buffer and adjustible gas block to get them to cycle properly. I will say this, I shot an old station ford escort at salvage yard at 25 yards and the round penetrated the entire engine and was stuck in the back seat.

+1

:)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
