Hand crank Gramophone

Post by Pitchy »

Just finished making this hand crank Gramophone, they were one of the first phonographs.
Kinda hard keeping the speed right but happy it works. :)

Lenn, that looks really great fun, I can imagine trying to keep the right speed after a few beers.......
All you need now is a little white dog sitting in front of it...

Lenn, wow, where did you ever find the small 78s? I remember the 45s, of course. What did you use for the stylus/needle cartridge? How did you measure and set the needle/tone arm weight at the point of contact with the record surface? This is one of your best creations ever! 8)

Thanks fellers, Bill well i tell ya it`s a trial and error thing, the tone arm has to be set so the point of the needle when swung over the needle has to come to the center of the post in the center of the record or it will skate across the record.
The records are kid records found on ebay. :)

Good one Lenn. The nuances of all those levers, pulleys and pivot points have got to be a challenge that is satisfying when it works. I cut the barrel on the conversion and milled a dovetail for a new front sight. Still filing it in for elevation but I'll be able to tap it over for windage. I'll take some pictures.
