Some wicked steel

Post by wvfarrier »

It took me about 12 weeks in total but its finally done. 14" blade, 8" tang (pinned), and a 72" shaft. The blade is made from 5160 (1/4") and is shaving sharp. I am hoping to take both a bear and deer with it this year.

Nice. You may have seen the one I made in Africa when I lived there. Not as nice as your but it did work ... and is still working there!

I like both of those. I've started a couple, and I keep a cold steel spear in my vehicle, JIC.

I have a lot of 5160 and enjoy making socket tangs along the lines of the crazy vikings and greek hoplites... hop lightly?

Thanks for the photos, good reference material for that file

What wood did you use? 5160 has a good reputation for blade work.

Liking it, WV! Good luck on your hunts. That 5160 is good stuff for blades. Did you get yours out of a 1950s/60s truck leaf spring?

Hickory is good and strong wood. Hope you can use that spear on a critter.

Those are both outstanding! I have a good collection of swords, knives, axes and hammers. The axes are mostly 5160. One is a large double bit axe. The Japanese swords are 9260 and the European long sword is 1095. All fully sharpened and meant to be used. One nice rapier also made out of spring steel. -Tutt

I have a skinning knife which is folded layers of 5160 and 1095. I purchased it. It was left hard, probably 61 or 62 on the Rockwell C scale. It will chip if I am not careful. Sharpening seems best with diamond, then polishing with ceramic. It holds the edge incredibly well. I am sure it is too hard for use as a spear. If it gets caught or twisted, it would probably snap. For a short thick blade, it seems to be good.

Yeah Piller thats definitely too hard. I like something around 50. 5160 is my go to for most blades as its durable and pretty rust resistant. Only down side is its a little finicky with heat treating
