Windshield Wiper Groups

Post by Bullard4075 »

The subject under discussion is a Ruger Mark II 30-06 rifle. Ammo is Barnes 180 TTSX. 200 yard shots go alternately to ten o'clock then 2 o'clock, ten then two back and forth like a windshield wiper action. The groups at ten and two are tight enough -for 200 yards- but this action has me baffled. If they were simply all over the place that would be one thing but this?
It is so consistent. Anyone seen this before? Thoughts. Sharps

I would suspect a bad scope , Mount or bases. Also bedding issues can give the same results. I had a Rem. 700 .243 that shot that way until I bedded it and floated the barrel. It then became a tack driver.

I agree with Chuck. I've seen a loose front sight do a similar thing!

Need more info....can't make a reasonable analysis with limited info.........how many shots were fired?........how many rds at 10 and 2?.....what was the distance from 10 to 2?.....how does the gun regularly shoot? .....try different ammo?....wind?....feel good on the hold?.......does it do it at 100?.....

Don't know how many rounds you fired but a limited amount with one kind of ammo is nothing.....anything can be coincidental with minimal shooting.

Sounds like my old M16, yes it was made before the forward assist, in basic training. The front sight wobbled a little from wear. It was the only gun in that armory which did not even have the raised area to lift the dust cover from being flat against the side of the receiver. That gun wasn't accurate enough for M.O.U.T. type of fighting.

Yep, sounds like glass or mount issues, you can never go wrong with bedding and floating!

Proper trigger control is just as important with a rifle as it is a handgun. Jerking the trigger could pull shots to the side.

Could be. That old M16 could let you move the trigger side to side about 3/4 of an inch. Too far right and it wouldn't release the sear. Too far left and the sear released without the trigger moving backwards at all.
