They are 30-30 ... Speer cases, Remington 9 1/2 Primer, 29 gr. of H322. The bullets are 170 gr. Winchester Silvertips. I have a small stash of them.

Only .30-30? Why, those wouldn't kill an anemic ground squirrel. That is not enough power to roll a deer 3 times, skin it, and field dress it in one shot. Why bother if you actually want to eat the deer?

Always admired the Silvertips and wish they were still in production. Jim, that is one serious crimp. Using the Lee die?

Now that the deer have evolved to grow kevlar skin, there is not much need. They would just bounce off and make the deer mad.

I am passing them on to the Lone Ranger. Since he's gotten older he has gone to using a carbine.

That's the way I like to do them....I can't prove it, but I think the powder burns more completely with a good, hard crimp. :?

I believe any ballistician would agree the crimp makes a difference.

I found 17 of them in a bunch of mixed bullets i got from an estate sale. Do you have 3 extra you wanna donate? Had 4 of the .303 Savage 190 gr bullets but they were really corroded. Also have 3 of the original R-P Bronze Point bullets. Is the cases new or once fired? Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Those old silvertips surely do add a touch of class. Very pretty ammunition!

Just out of curiosity I looked at the load in QuickLoad, Jim. QL thinks that load would run about 42.7k psi, 2160 fps out of the carbine, so moving right along and just a scosh over SAAMI's 42K max. I seldom load a jacketed bullet for my 30/30's but when I do I have become a fan of Hodgdon's LVR. Which most definitely requires just that same serious crimp your ammo has.

Thanks! Yes, it's a top-end load. The book actually goes a few tenths of grains higher, closer to 30 grains.

I like LVR. I experimented with it in the Trapper using Speer's 130 gr. Hot-Cor bullet. The top loads ran close to 2450 fps from the 16" barrel. Out of the rifle they clocked 2750 fps and shot extremely accurate. NOTE: It is not my rifle and I did not fire the group!
