Recipie For Troubled Times

Post by JimT »

It seems we are living in “times that try men's souls.” Political unrest, social unrest, heath issues, financial problems etc. etc. etc. No matter what side you are on about any issue there is arguing and fighting and unease of mind and soul. Many feel the answer is to get involved politically and work for whichever belief/issue that they are passionate about. Others simply want to hide and wait out the unrest. A great lot of people have no clue what to do other than whatever authorities they look to who tell them what to do.

I don't have any answers for the issues, but I do have a way to experience some peace. I did not make this up nor is it “my” solution. Almost everyone knows this but we tend to forget it when the stress levels get elevated. It is an ancient solution that goes back to the dawn of humankind.

I am suggesting music.

Not just any music, mind you. Positive, uplifting, hopeful music. And no I am not saying “Church” music or religious music. Some of it is positive and uplifting but some of it is downright depressing. Music is a gift from Papa God and if you have ears to hear, you can hear Him and get a revelation of His love, His care for you, in many different kinds of music. I enjoy different kinds of music at different times. Find a song that fits you and and the season you are in, and that is hopeful and positive.

The Beatles song “All You Need Is Love” is a statement of truth that comes from Papa God! “Let's Work Together” by Canned Heat is a great revelation of how much we need each other. There are thousands of positive, upbuilding, hopeful songs in this world. When things start pressing in on you, grab one of those kinds of songs and begin to sing! You can change the way you feel and change the atmosphere around you!

If you are dealing with depression/frustration limit your exposure to the negative, whether it comes through sermons or the news or other people you associate with. As Baxter Kruger says, “One good song can overcome a multitude of screwed-up sermons.” Find that good song and spend time listening to it and singing it. It may take a little work at first, but keep it up. Peace of mind and heart are worth it.

Staying involved with passionate hobbies like antique Winchesters & Colts was an excellent diversion, plus its financially productive.

Now I'm old and the best remedy is avoidance....be very selective on who you hang around...watch TV only to a point.....when Hannity comes on, watch him until you feel your heart rate increase then turn it to "The Waltons".

One thing about the internet chat rooms like here at Leverguns....you can select who you talk to, then tune to another subject...and the best thing is nobody here is

Music can be a friend alright, used to listen to late 60`s rock into the 70`s but now old western like Merl Haggard and others light my board.
Can`t stand useless racket that has no story, gotta be from the heart but in the end it will be worship the Lord music that counts.

I like so many different kinds of music that the only way I really organize it is whether it is energizing or relaxing. If I need some energy I’ll pick the rev ya up stuff and if I need to relax I pick the other stuff. Doesn’t matter whether it’s rock or country or blues or classic quartet or orchestra or jazz or folk or eastern or fusion or heavy metal or whatever - just if is an ‘upper’ or ‘downer’...

I have pretty broad tastes in music. Its not well known but Pavarotti did some full scale concerts with full orchestra that had some of the most emotional performances I have ever seen with various musicians from other styles. Here are two of my favorites.

Pav and Celine Dion

Pav and James Brown. Yeah, really!
