Um, There's a Spitfire in the Living Room...

Post by Old No7 »

My old organ teach (took lessons from 1968-1978) was a pretty English lass who married a Yank and came over here, but as she used to work in a Spitfire factory and was proud of her English heritage, she had an awesome painting of a Spitfire in her living room.

This guys got that beat by a long shot!

Something about the lines of the fuselage top left isn't quite right, but the Malcolm Hood canopy and wing tip clearly IDs it as a Spit.

And note the painting behind it -- how's this for a work of art... (Or is it a clever PhotoShop image?)

Cheers!

I agree, certainly the wing is spitfire but the exhaust stacks seem wrong...

Needs to have a sound system to play the screech of a Merlin!

Earlier models (Marks as the British say) had three exhaust stacks on a side. The exhaust from two cylinders was combined together. See the Mark Vb for instance. The exhaust stacks were turned 90 degrees aft.
Later Marks had an individual exhaust stack for each of the engine's 12 cylinders, 6 on a side. For example see a Spitfire Mark 24 . Reference: SPITFIRE, text by Bill Sweetman and illustrations (really good, by the way) by Rikyu Wantanabe.

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated!

That is an example of why I like this forum. Cool pictures and a lot of knowledge.

Yeah, I thought it needed twice as many exhaust stacks and the engine space looks way short for a Rolls Merlin.
