10mm revisited.

Post by 2ndovc »

Last summer I bought one of the new S&W 610s that was a complete disappointment. First time out it completely failed on the eighth round. I sent it back to S&W and they blamed the cylinder falling out on "User Error"! What a load of BS! I sold it to a guy that said he could fix it so off it went.
I still wanted a revolver in 10mm so I started looking around again. Ruger makes several different models and I settled on a stainless Blackhawk. Nice and heavy and I'm pretty sure this one won't break!
I took it out the other day and got the sights where they belong at 25yds shooting off the bench. The target was the best I could do that morning shooting offhand with both hands. I'm sure I can do better with some handloads. One thing I was surprised by was how much it kicked. Snappy bugger! :D

No clips. Works just like a.45 convertible and headspaces on the case mouth. Came with a.40 S&W cyl. Too but I doubt I’ll use that one.

Quick question for you. What is the cylinder length on the Ruger.
I shoot a Contender in 10mm mag and would like a revolver in the same. The overall cartridge length is 1.632 (case length is 1.240) .

That 40 cylinder would be a great candidate to ream out to 38-40. Nice looking revolver by the way.

The cylinder measured 1.71 with my calipers. Hope that helps.

The .38-40 re-chamber is an interesting thought. :D

Moon clips are for swing-out or top-break revolvers.

On a SA, you'd have to pull the center pin each time and lose any speed advantage.

Yes....it is a snappy cartridge in a revolver...I have one of the Buckeye Rugers in 38-40/10 mm. This revolver has perfect dimensions.....a .400 groove diameter and .401 cylinder mouths.....it shoots either cartridge with the same accuracy, capable of hitting beer cans at 100 meters.

There are no inaccurate cartridges....only the guns they come in.

In the 10mm I've always liked a 180 gr hard cast, sized .401 behind Herco....

No moon clips Gunny....don't need them.....the cylinder is stepped and extraction is through the extractor rod.---6

Yep I’ve got a couple 180 grain molds as well as a couple 200 grainers . The four cavity ones are my favorite (of course) .

I doubt I ever got a revolver in 10mm but I sure like the Kimber 1911 6” 10mm that’s living in my safe at the moment. 8)

The Rock Island 10mm in 1911 configuration are heavy enough that the kick isn't bad. I like mine. 25 yard accuracy at the range so far is 2 to 2 1/2 inch groups. It isn't broken in yet. The Ruger Blackhawk looks great. Now I know what my next want is.

I have 10mm autos in Colt DE and Springfield Amory TRP persuasions.

Accurate enough for combat or charging bears but....

NETHER of them will shoot as good as my 4 inch bbl S&W 624 .44 Special!!

Nice!

was recently at the fun store and saw a GP-100 in 10mm that piqued my curiosity as revolvers are my first love.

Wound up putting a deposit down and getting on the waiting list for the new production 6" Python though instead.

Production currently at 3000 or so with another 15,000 on a waiting list - it may take a while

My dad has been waiting for his new Python for a couple of months. He's hoping that it will be in by the time he heads back to FL in November.
I had a little fun on Gunbroker yesterday, I'll have a new ( or almost new) Browning Low Wall on the way this week. :D

That would be cool but this one is a .45 Colt and still in the box. I've been chasing one for some time, just happened to be in the right place at the right time. :D

Nice Ruger in a great caliber. As for your 40 S&W cylinder, you pretty much have a 38-40 right there! I love the 38-40 and will get a revolver chambered for it to go along with the Browning B92 I had re-barreled for it.
