Feeding problems in a rossi 92 .44 mag

Post by Storm W »

My Rossi has gone through fazes as it broke in. When I first got it it fed Hornady Leverevaluation super smooth but I had to run it hard to take others. As it smoothed out it didn't like the Hornady anymore but fed regular 240 grain stuff without issue. I ran some diamond lapping paste in it and it really smoothed out and ran everything but the Hornady great. Then I noticed that some of the side screws were coming loose so I tightened them with loctite. I didn't go crazy tight but just snug. Now it won't hardly feed. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm new to the forum and it looks like there is some great info hear. If this is a common question I apologize but I didn't come up with anything on the search.

Hopefully one of our regulars will stop by soon. Nate Kiowa Jones is a Rossi specialist he owns Steves Gunz and has a video on making Rossi’s run. I have a 357 Rossi and he was able to help me out to get it running. Hope he comes along shortly. Welcome to the board.

You don't say what 240 bullets you're using. But, in general, the 1892 doesn't like semi- or full-wadcutters. There needs to be a bit of an ogive to facilitate the feeding transition from angled on the carrier to straight into the chamber.

2ndly, the clearance between the rails is critical to control that transition. 3rdly, it is AOL sensitive. So, if you're reloading your own, pay attention to that detail also.

I'm just using American eagle flat tips and hollow points. It's not the ammo. It used to feed great. Its after I snuggled up the screws that were coming loose it wouldn't feed anything reliably.

Does it cycle ok (without ammo)...?

May be a screw tip is hitting the innards; I locked up my Ruger 10/22 that way due to a too-long scope base screw I snugged up.

Does anyone know any threads that might deal with this issue? The lifter seems like it's not coming up enough. The bullet come in at weird angles the either hitting low or more often now that now coming in at a high angle and hitting the top of the chamber. This is all new after I tightened the screws. I have tried backing them off but it hasn't changed.

Well if anyone else runs into this giving the gun a good degreasing and re lubricating it fixed the problem.

I was given a Rossi 92,knockoff for the Winshester pump,in .22mag.Would not feed more than 1 or 2 rounds before jaming. Very good gunsmith took it apart ,cleaned lubed and put it back together. He shoed me the trouble.Cheap metal in the parts and poor workmanship from the factory.10 years before that I bought a Rossi 38 spcl revoler and ater the secong loading 2nd or 3rd shot the cylinder would not turn.Dealer sent it back but factory said nothing wrong and said I was using hot reloads.Dealer ask if I was and I told him you said never use anything but factory loads. No nfaith in anything rossi!!!

Glad you found the source of the problem. I was hoping Steve might come along and give you some advice. Hopefully you flushed all that lapping compound out of the action?
