The most momentous wartime message

Post by Naphtali »

The most momentous wartime message simply read: "The mission of this Allied Force was fulfilled at 0241, local time, May 7th, 1945."

The anniversary of Dwight D. Eisenhower's message is Thursday.

Such a simple statement, but it gives me the chills (or something) every time I read it and consider what led up to it.

President Truman wasn't quite so terse. But, it was in effect the end of WWII.

August 14, 1945

“This is the day we have been waiting for since Pearl Harbor. This is the day when Fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would.”

All of my Uncles and two grandfathers served in the Pacific. My dad was the only one in African Campaign, Italian Campaign, and the invasion of France. But he was also the only ground troop. The rest were either USAAF or USN. August 14, 1945 was more significant on a personal level to my family.

Patton thought we should gather up the remainer of the German Army and march on USSR....I would have agreed. Too late now.
