Farewell to Hondo

Post by hondo1892 »

Hondo was my mountain cur buddy for almost twelve years. I have followed Hondo up and down hills chasing squirrels most of his life. He started having problems and was walking like he was drunk. A trip to the vet and she gave us bad news and said he probably had a liver tumor. We came home with some meds to see if it would help on Monday. Yesterday when I got up he wouldn't drink or get up to go out and relieve himself. I called my daughter to come over to drive Hondo and me to the vets office for dreaded end. I wasn't sure I would be ok to drive home myself because US127 is stuff shoot when you are really paying attention. I have lost dogs before but Hondo was extra special to me. He had been the best dog we have had in our home ever. He did like to chase the ladies a little to much and we had to watch him close or he would sneak off. We kept him in a kennel for a couple years and he always went in on his own we never had to coax him with food. The last six years he's been in the house with us and he never tore anything up like our other dogs had done. We knew his days were growing short but I didn't think it would come this soon. I never thought I would miss a dog as much as I do Hondo. My wife and I have been moping around for two days now missing him.

It is never easy to lose a good dog. You did the right thing in not making him suffer. My sympathies for your loss.

I have found that the older I get the harder it is to lose a faithful canine friend. My sincere condolences for your loss, I know how rotten you must feel right now.
Rest in peace Hondo.

It's sad, but our friends get old and break down, just like we do.

We owe them the respect of either easing or eliminating their pain if we can.

Remember your good times. Think of him when he was strong, fast, loving his life and being with you.

You'll get through this.

Just as bad as losing family, IMO....Except a good dog never does you wrong.

George Graham Vest said it best.

Gentlemen of the Jury: a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

Can’t explain how the furry little things worm their way into our hearts but the void that they leave is out of proportion to their cubic inches. Hope your heart heals and at some point another buddy finds you. Sorry for the loss of Hondo, extremely glad you had the opportunity to share your love with a buddy that deserved it.

Thanks everyone. I'm not without a pooch right now. I have been taking care of my daughter and son-in-laws dog most of his life. For some reason he refuses to behave at their house but is fine for me.

Nothing as good as a good dog, and the better they are, the tougher it is to end their life. I've had to have several put down over my life, and never left the vet without shedding tears for them. Sorry you lost a great friend.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's never easy. Both of our current companions are fairly young, but time goes by all too fast.

Heal well, the memories remain.
