Puppies are being born.

Our Irish Terrier, Aoife, is having her puppies right now. She is under my and PillHer's bed. I can hear them but cannot see anything. We have some things stored under there and Aoife pushed some things and made herself a nest. Our son saw one puppy, and he says it was dark brown. I am not sure what to do, but I want to get them moved someplace easier to get to for us.

Piller...get her a box of some sort with a blanket that will absorb fluid. She will feel more secure with a little "wall" around her.

Thanks. She seems pretty secure there, but I want to move her and the puppies to another room and into a box with some old towels. The other dogs are upset at being kicked out and having the door shut. Well, the old chihuahua is sort of ignoring it all. She was a breeder for the woman who gave her to us when she couldn't have any more puppies. I don't know how many litters she had. The father is upset that he cannot go see what is going on.

So far I saw 3 puppies. All is quiet now. Aoife is curled around them and sort of seems fine with us checking on her. One puppy had crawled adout 2 feet away and was crying looking for momma. I moved it back and it went right to feeding.

Chances are mom will defend her pups from the rest of the pack, mostly barking and snarling- they will learn what the safe distance is.
Puppies can not regulate their temperature so if it chilly dont be afraid to put a heat lamp over the box. I'd avoid a heating pad though. Pretty much hands off for the next few weeks until eyes and ears start working then the fun begins!!
Puppies NEED to be handled, every chance the family has pick em up , hold , scratch, feel - you get the idea- it's very good stimulation and helps with socialization.

Squeaking and other noises throughout the night. Coffee has been good this morning. If we can get her and the puppies out, we will move them into another room. She seems content to be as far under the bed as she can get. The 1 year old ChiWeenie is going nuts trying to get in and see what is going on.

That's great Piller...it truly is a wonderful moment as when we used to breed Yorkies they were some of the best times in our lives. Gunny said it right...dogs are very social animals so feel free to spend "a little" time around them.....momma dog will hawk you out.......just change the towels every day and wash em (you know this) with a mild soap like dishwashing soap and just enough bleach to kill germs......not much.......and use a dryer to soften the fibers. Puppies have very delicate skin. An even better thing to use than towels is that soft material.....I don't know what it's called but we have small blankets made from it....it's absorbent but is very soft.

If you choose to use a heat lamp, be very, very careful. Our FD has responded to three fully involved house fires that started due to heat lamps being used to warm baby chicks. Make sure the heat lamp is very stable, cannot be knocked over, and that no flammable materials are too close.

Thanks everyone. Momma Dog, Aoife, has let us move her into a box with a towel. The box is where she can control access easily. I have been in to pet her several times, and could touch the puppies once. The other dogs are settling down into this new normal. The box seems better because she can sit up and watch while the puppies feed. No pictures yet except this one. She is pretty protective.

The puppies are kind of hidden from view by the way she is sitting. So far, lots of squeaking sounds, eating and sleeping.

Good you got her moved, I appreciate that she is protective but you really need to put hands on all of them. Make sure they don't have hernias, no cleft palates, etc. if she won't let you touch them then you'll have to do it when she is out doing her business.

When I had my first litter , Winnie would not let my other dog, Dixie even close to the room her puppies were in. Second litter was the same buy she would let her daughter, Claro in the room. Third litter poor Dixie knew to not even try! All 3 litters loved their aunt Dixie though.

So far all they are doing is feeding and sleeping. Still squeaking when hungry and cannot find momma fast enough. I am at the Dentists office right now. A crown broke.

Not sure if you have a postal scale or not? Weigh each pup daily will tell you if they are eating or not. My first litter I had a pup that wasn't eating and Winnie KNEW it wasn't healthy... That was the hardest thing ever driving home from the vets office!

Yes eating and sleeping is what they do now, give it a few more weeks when they find their voices, learn to walk- like sailors on shore leave -the fun has yet to begin!

Smallest one, a female, somehow got out. I put her back. 2 females and 1 male. All seem to be growing well. Not much noise today. The 2 females are slightly lighter in color. The male has a darker head.

Funny how the smallest one is the most active. I put her back in the back of the box, and she is at the front again.

The male is on the right. We have made a list of names and are trying to decide. Colter is at the top of the list for the smallest due to her long distance runs.

We are naming the male Trooper. The medium sized one, a female, is being named Tamale.

They do look healthy! Its amazing how mobile a days old puppy is! Right now the only sense they have is scent, eyes next about 3 weeks old. By about 4 weeks the ears begin to work. It is truly a fun time watching puppies grow!
