More 480 Achilles

Post by JimT »

Yesterday I continued testing the Killebrew bullet in the 480 Achilles. The last loads I used were with 12 gr. 2400 for around 870 fps. Yesterday I was using a heavy load (for this gun) of WC820 .. Military Surplus H110. These loads were closer to 960 fps and are as heavy as I want to try.

I shot using a two-hand hold on a pistol rest that was sitting on the hood of my truck.

That is some fine shootin' Jim. Guess I need to find a heeled bullet mold for 41 Colt 'cause the 480 seems to really like that bullet.

This week I was digging for something else - and look what turned up. The original 480 Achilles Bitner Bullet you gave me way back when.

Forgive the blurry foto.....I blame the 20+ cups a day java swilling knucklehead behind the camera.

.480" round ball swaged-in with a bit of full diameter around its equator over 5 gr. of red dot.....

and lee 325 gr. using gas check shank for the heel seated with the thwack of a mallet over 12 gr. 2400.

Rev. Taylor sure can shoot, even upside down using his pinky !

With my eyesight being so poor and my spectacles being hand me downs from Mr. McGoo, i have to use my imagination to see that 1.5 " black square at 25 yds.

I have shot targets for many years using about a 1" square at 25 yards.
It looks a bit smaller than the standard Ruger front sight and you can tell if you are off to one side or the other.
These days with my old eyes I have to go to the range early in morning and use a bay that has the sun behind me.
If it ain't too durn bright I can actually see the targets fairly well .. at least until my eyes start blurring.
I think for me, getting older would not be so bad if I could just see as well as I did when I was 28.
Alas .........

When I start seeing multiples I stay home, keep drinking and don't go shooting!

When I shoot red dot sights, I either use my left eye or I aim using the dot on the left of the 3 that I see with my left eye closed. Green dot sights and regular metal sights do not do that to me.

That .480 Achilles looks to be a decent cartridge. No need to justify it, and it seems to be able to pretty well show that it is certainly capable of accuracy.

From the "load data" article......

Bullseye

· 5.0 gr. Bullseye = 717 fps
· 6.0 gr. Bullseye = 883 fps

I have some 325 gr. lees loaded over 5 gr. reddot.....but am hesitant to try them. This is out of a new model ruger.

Your advice, Rev. Taylor ?

I would be interested in how the accuracy is, when you get a chance. I have not tried that and always like to see how things work.
