Last Battle of Britain Ace dies at 101

Post by stretch »

May they all rest easy.

They did a tremendous job against long odds, and I think many of our continuing
freedoms are thanks to them - and people like them.

As Winston Churchill said, " ... never through human history was so much owed, by so many, to so few." May this war hero rest in peace.

A big plus one to that.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Plus 2.

They did an unbelievable job, when it was all on the line. I can't imagine the weight they felt on their shoulders.
And with that, did it with style.
God Speed to you Sir.

The biggest problem the Luftwaffe had was range, the Me109E-3 had NO long range fuel tanks, so endurance over England was limited. IF they had the Me109E-4, WITH long range fuel tanks things MIGHT have turned out differntly! But then again, look who they had a leader. Goring (sp?) was an idiot as a leader!

I have Gen. Galland's book, "The First And The Last". Germans only had 30 min of time over London. And they could not escort bombers over most of the UK thus... added with the Brit's Radar and coordination they were doomed. Both the British and the Germans had (and always had) short range fighters. None had long range. They never really fixed that problem.

Oh, and the real workhorse was not the Spitfire but the Hurricane. They shot down more than the Spitfire and they were not competitive with the ME-109 (but their pilots were!!!)

They were tough men in tough times and they rose to the occasion. RIP!!

The thing that ticks me off the most is Dowding was the one mainly responsible for the success of the BOB from the time he was appointed head of Fighter Command several years before it all started, getting all the sector and radar stations set up and phone lines burried so they could not be damaged by bombs. And what do they do when it's all over? They kick him out and and send him off to Washington to get him out of the way!!!!!

God Bless All of them !!! A lot of these Guys had a tough life to begin with and the war was an extension of it. My Dad was a ditch digger quitting school at 14 and when the war broke out and He went in the Army , He told Me that boot camp was "a country club" . He said He never saw so much food or had as much fun as boot camp.

WWI saw the airplane start to change how war was conducted, but WWII was won in the skies as much as it was on the ground. Those pilots put forth some amazing effort, and as a result, we are still able to fight for our freedom. Not to take away from anyone or anything, but The Polish refugees who flew for England in the B.O.B. were also an important part. They hated the Germans, and willingly took dangerous missions just on the chance of fighting them. All who flew were heroes.
