500 pounds of meat

Post by Paladin »

Got to add about 500 pounds of meat to two families freezers a few days ago. On day three of the hunt, this guy fell over (after walking about 10-15yards) about 150 yards from me. The WildWest Co-Pilot did a great job with all rounds fired hitting the heart/lung area. The only slug in him not in pieces was the Grizzly in the photo which went through the right front shoulder, chest, and a few ribs stopping in the left rear flank. The first round fired was a 45-70 325 gr Hornady FTX which fragmented into the heart-lung area shredding lots of both. I didn't get a shot at the Grizzly who showed up later to get his share as my "Friends" scared him off with the ATVs they rode in.

Very cool. I love moose meat. I would rather have a piece of backyard bbq moose than the finest steakhouse porterhouse. With fiddleheads of course.
Thanks for the info on the ammo too.

Very cool. Proof right there that the .45-70 still does the job.

Nice! Moose meat is some primo eatin'. Our first week is going on right now. The second is in October.

FW nailed it! Nice moose steak, some fiddleheads, and a big mess of homefries.
That's some backwoods livin' large! :D

I believe you could load that slug up in another case and harvest another one.

Congratulations!

Gee, I was told the 45-70 was an antique and near worthless. Fer moose you need a 496 Prevaricator Mugnum with a 539 gr spiro-jet smart boolit!

Excellent report. When's supper?

Where is a good place to shoot a moose?
About 20 feet from a pickup truck.

When I got my moose many years ago I swore never to shot another unless I could back a wrecker up to it-LOL.
It was about 150 or 175 yards from the truck and took 3 of us most of the day to load it up.

Fantastic and Congratulations !
Have to say a 45-70 is one fine cartridge to get the job done. Only caliber I can think of I would rather have along that we do have is the 50 Alaskan.
That will be a whole lot of good eating. I like that "grill door" photo ! The one direction of a shot I have never been faced with very happily.
