Winchester 94

Post by Plottman »

I picked up a new to me 94, appears similar to xtr but no xtr stamp on 20 inch barrel, has checkered stock and forend and both match nicely. Angle eject and cross bar safety. Has anyone seen documents on last american made serial numbers ? This one has 6492- - -. Will there be serial numbers or winchester on the stocks some where?

AFAIK, the XTR Model 94 was discontinued after the Legacy Model 94 (w/checkered stocks) was introduced.

The SN of the last Model 94 produced in 2006 is not known at this time.

All USRAC records were turned over to BATFE when the New Haven factory closed, and the Feds ain't talking.

The current belief is that the last 2006 rifle's SN is in the 7,000,000 to 7,100,000 SN range.

Some few very late 2006 Model 94's have been seen/found in the 6,800,000 SN range with no markings other than the chambering, the SN & the proofmark.

As above, sounds like a legacy. Does it have a semi pistol grip stock?

Just to be sure when you say crossbar safety do you mean buttons on the side of the reciever that pushed one way is safe and the other fire? Because if so it was the second to the last generation of 94 but seemingly a fairly late one. My tang safety angle eject ranger 94 serial number is in the 654xxxx range.

Winchester changed the crossbolt safety (CBS) on the Model 94, which was introduced at about SN 6,000,000 in 1992, to a tang safety at about SN 6,450,000 in 2003.

Yes, it does have the crossbolt safety, not the tang style. That is very helpful information, Thank you all. The checked stocks may not be original wood. The checkered stocks provide much better surface for tired hands. I installed skinner peep in factory holes and recommend front skinner. The factory front sight was drilled and tapped when I got it, do not know if it came from winchester that way. My gunsmith was able to smooth trigger pull to around 4 pounds. Turned out well. Nice gun to take to the tree or bay.

My 2005 vintage model 94AE Ranger Compact (Trapper) has a tang safety and a serial number 651XXXX. It's chambered in 357 magnum, and has been 100% reliable since day one.
