Bass Pro restricting Cabelas military discount program

Post by 41Mag-fan »

All you veterans out there be aware of new policy at Cabelas restricting their veterans discount program. I've always gotten a 5% discount on everything I've bought at Cabelas because I'm a veteran. Yesterday I was denied the discount on some reloading bullets and was told by the cashier that Bass Pro, the new owner of Cabelas, is restricting the program. The Bass Pro program excludes almost all gun/shooting/reloading items from the veterans program. This includes ammunition, black powder items, and air rifles. That makes the Cabelas discount pretty much worthless for me. Bass Pro says they are proud of their program, but I say shame on them. They support their fishermen but not their shooters. I guess I don't need to shop at Cabelas or Bass Pro anymore.

Any place that snobbishly emphasizes 'sporting' firearms that excludes AR-15's, or tried to 'sanitize' them, or mostly sells clothing and fishing gear, is not a place I will do business with.

There isn't as much profit margin in firearms, ammunition and components as there is in clothing, footwear, boats, ATVs, and other accessories.

Cabelas does sell AR rifles. As far as "sanitizing" them goes, the entire shooting industry including the NRA calls them MSRs now for Modern Sporting Rifles. ARs are overrated anyway.

I was wondering if that was just one store's decision, but no:

Well on closer inspection, the exclusions aren't just guns and ammunition and such.

When I'm driving by anyway, I like to stop and look inside the Bargin Cave.
Also, when all the guns and ammo dried up 8-10 years ago and small shops were doubling and tripling prices, Cabelas kept their same prices and put limits on amounts.

I've got no gripe with Cabelas. They had this forced on them by Bass Pro. I never liked the sale of Cabelas to Bass Pro, because I thought it would reduce competition. Here in St. Louis the Cabelas and Bass Pro stores are just a few miles apart. In my experience here, Bass Pro charged higher prices for ammunition, and I thought they may force their higher prices in the Cabelas store. I can see no good for sportsmen coming from the merger. The restricted veterans discount is the first indicator of this I've seen. I bet Cabelas employees don't like it either.

Well said Ray. I don't get griping about limitations that a retailer imposes on a free benefit. They don't owe you anything.

Bass Pro, 50 acres of parking and not a single parking spot for semi’s, not to mention over priced and know-it-all “butt-ociates” ,, just another Gander Mtn yuppie store. Todd/3leggedturtle

The military discount got people into the store and they more than likely bought other stuff, too. Maybe they brought their friends? The optics are bad on this one. I've been to the local Bass Pro and don't give two hoots for it.
