Uberti's NEW "Winchester 1894"

Post by kaschi »

Just saw a short glimpse of Uberti's new copy of the Winchester 1894 on a youtube short video. It was on one of Jeff Quinn's Gunblast segments. From what I could see, it did NOT have a tang safety and it did NOT have angle eject for us purists. Let's wish them well with this project.

Don't know how to do links but you can find it like this:
Go to www. youtube.com and in the search filed type "SHOT Show 2017, Day 1-Gunblast.com" exactly as I put in quotations. It's located at 10:25 minutes.

Wouldn't it be great if they made em like the old pre-war 94 rifles and carbines.
And sad that it couldn't be done by Winchester.

Well heck. If they were going for early type 94, they could have put the front band where it should have been instead of where they were located after ramp front sights came in. Oh well. I'm more likely to buy a Winchester in any event, its not hard to find them.

^^^ Yeah, how ' bout it! It does look dumb as hell. But now that they are actually making a 94, I'm going to write them a letter and say, "now that you actually make this model, please get the details right the same way you did with the 66, 73 and 76". By the way was that one pictured in the video supposed to be a carbine or short rifle? Couldn't figure it out because carbines have two barrel bands but the gun looks like it has a barrel longer than 20". A rifle (short or long) would have a magazine tube ring dovetailed into the underside of the barrel as well as a forearm metal cap-- not barrel bands. Lastly, it was hard to tell what kind of buttplated was on that 94.

I'm interested .... in looking at one at least. Uberties have always been priced out of my reach.

There's still lots of reasonable 94s out there if you stay away from auction sites, and stores....

Why couldn't they have bevelled the bottom of the receiver the way the old ones used to be? I don't like the hard edges of the ports 64's. I am disappointed they didn't do that.

I noticed that too. It looks like it's based on the post WWII's to 64. The other tell was the buttstock to receiver fit. Pre-WWII 94's and 92's (38-40 & 44-40) shared the same wood.

I feel they may have missed the boat. I think a Pre-war 26" octagon would be the ticket. I know the Leveraction rifle cal. silhouette guys would like it.

Bought the Uberti 1894 rifle in 38-55 and using a 1894 winchester reloading original tool to reload. Loving this rifle shooting .260 gr cast with imr 3031 powder. I use long starline brass and the possibilities shooting this rifle is great fun. Accurate be on belief.

I have also noticed the front barrel band mis-location (to be properly representative of what most think of as classic "pre-war") and it is an irritant; I know in the decade prior to WWII there were changes in that area as well as shotgun butts etc. They had the opportunity to do it "right," a proper Pre War SRC in its original glory...indeed, other than the barrel band and the aforementioned receiver edge detail, the gun looks at a glance the proper early 94/1894 saddle ring carbine, complete with the ladder sight.

You will notice Winchester-Miroku failed on the barrel band issue as well--it's almost as if Uberti was just parroting what Winchester was doing on that--having gotten the carbine butt, long forend (forearm) and saddle ring parts down right. However, in its latest 94 carbine, Winchester also relegated its (earlier-provided) ladder sight to the large loop version only. Too bad, but you can probably swap in the right part. Realizing that some prefer the buckhorn sights, nevertheless, if they're going to go to the trouble in the first place on these, the default should be the ubiquitous pre-war ladder that was factory issue on about 90% of the carbines.

These guys are getting these so close, why not complete the job?! As has been said, if one just wants a regular post-war 94, safety or not, angle eject or not, there are plenty of them out there used.

Ed. re Winchester-Miroku 94, I was wrong about the long forend - I looked again and it too has been compromised to being cut short like the post 1950/51 guns. Yet another demerit!

The 1894 tool I bought works great even though I have to flare the case mouths and trim if need be. The tool will prime and seat the bullet perfectly with both the short and long starline cases. This rifle to me is the perfect weight and vary versatile. In the morning I will crono loads with imr 3031.
