Back after being away for a while....

Post by mod71alaska »

I've been away from the Forum for a while and want to say, "It's good to be back!" I just got too busy with some of life's big issues and challenges. I see you've kept the campfire glowing...I would expect nothing less on this great Forum!...and trust there are new Levergunners sitting around enjoying the Forum's wealth of levergun knowledge and warm, friendly hospitality.

I am winter coyote hunting in the remaining weeks of winter in northern NH. (Anyone else out there winter coyote hunting?) We still have 2-3 feet of snow on the ground and even more in the woods. I've buried the snow machine a few times already and digging out a 2-up isn't fun! Now in mid-March the snow is setting up nicely for riding on top at night or early in the morning with the day temps rising above freezing while the night temperature are still dropping into the single digits. That also means it is maple sugaring season here in New England!

I don't think I have any new Winchester lever actions to report on. No room in the safe anyway. :D

Update on Daily: My lab "Daily" has beaten all the odds! She had cancer surgery last February and unfortunately they didn't get it all. Last May I posted that I found more tumors and the vet gave her only "2-3 weeks to 2-3 months" to live. I am very happy to tell you that Daily still is with me, still doesn't want to go out the door without a retrieving dummy in her mouth, and is very eager to retrieve her dummies in the snow no matter how deep it is!!! :D She still has the cancer, and quite possibly at this point in time living on more heart and memories than good health, but her heart is big and she won't quit. She loves winter just like I do. She wants to be outside all the time! When she is inside her favorite place to sleep still is on my feet under my desk, and I will miss that terribly someday.

It's good to be back, guys! I trust all of you are doing well and moving those beautiful old Winchesters off the shelves!

Victor

PS: I have a number of unanswered PMs. Please accept my apology. I will get to them.

Welcome back; always enjoy reading your posts.

Sorry about your dog, glad she is still with you. I have an older french brittany that has gone through tough times, but is still joyful and runs around as well as she can on two and one-half legs. She has been cheerful through it all.

Nice to have a full gun safe. Mine is and now I have too many guns under the beds.

Hey bro.........some things just ain't the same without certain dudes. I need to correspond with guys from all over and as far as my Northest buddies are concerned, well, they have been pretty quiet lately, except maybe Old Win. Figured the snow got you guys all buried up in it.

Anyway, how's the weather up your way? :D -----6

Didn't have much luck calling coyotes this year. Snow never got deep so the neighbors were running their dogs every weekend. Last year was the opposite , deep powder snow couldn't run dogs.

Tapped trees last weekend and we hit a warm spell. In the 50's and 60's and not freezing at night, so the sap isn't running at all. I will send the warm weather your way so it will cool down around here to get some sap.

Good to hear your dog is doing good. Have to go cut some firewood now. Good to see you back!

Good that Your back. Great news about Daily, I hope She continues to keep on going. Good luck with the coyote hunting. We have had a lot more deer here than usual. I took a big doe in December. early in February We saw some trucks driving the roads on Sunday after Church. one Guy was going slow down My road so I stopped and asked Him if He lost a dog? He pulled in My driveway and told Me He and His buddies were running hounds after coyote's. they had GPS collars on the dogs. told Me they had killed 32 of them back there in the last year. I'm always working so I don't get out much.
He pulled out His cell-camera thing and showed Me a bunch of pictures. I guess that's why the deer are back.
Lastly, there is a thread going now on the forum about the Stevens 425 Levergun. Have You ever had any experience with them? they seem pretty scarce. Have a Great Day.

Welcome back Victor.

Very glad to hear that Daily is still with you!

I've been out for fox and 'yotes on a few (-15), (-10) and 0 mornings, but the cold and deep snow worked against me. (Don't have a snowmobile...) Check out my recent post (a week or so back) about Snow Camo for this season.

Good huntin'!

Thanks very much for your words of welcome. They are much appreciated, and it is good to be back among many Levergunner friends!

Has there been a "Levergun Porn" thread this winter? I think a "porn" thread of our rifles always is uplifting as winter drags on and spring is slow to come. Seeing pics of each other's fine lever action (and other) rifles during this time gets us thinking about the active shooting season that's just ahead. Winter weather is tenaciously hanging on in many places this year. It is here! If someone wants to start a "Levergun (and other) Rifle Porn" thread jump right in. Otherwise, I'll dig up a couple of photos over the weekend and start the ball rolling. I've been selling instead of buying leverguns so if my pic is of a new-to-me rifle it will be of "the other" kind of rifle, probably a Sako. I'll just have to look....

Again, thanks for your warm welcome back!
