Some success!

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Well, as some of you know, I took Y2K out shooting last month at his grandfather's (my FIL's), and we shot my 1860 Army Colt reproduction. It was a ton of fun, though we had an issue with several chain fires. I'm pretty sure, from the general consensus here, that this was due to the percussion caps being loose. I don't recall this issue before, but I had not fired the revolver in well over a decade.

Problems began when I went to clean it, as reported here: http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=59250

Three of the nipples came out without any problems, but the other three were stuck, and stuck good! Well, I soaked the cylinder for a week in WD-40, to no avail. I soaked it in Liquid Wrench for two weeks - to no avail! So I ordered a new nipple wrench, which I tried this weekend when it arrived. Success - partly! I was able to remove two more of the nipples, so I am down to one stubborn so-and-so that just doesn't want to budge.

I ordered some Kroil. I'll try that when it arrives, then the other suggestions you all have provided. Meanwhile, lesson learned, I purchased a couple tubes of Birchwood Casey's choke lube. I am going to unscrew the nipples on every blackpowder cap & ball revolver I own, apply the choke lube to the threads, and then screw them back in, but just loosely. I'll just make it a habit to tighten them down before I shoot any in the future (and after this experience, will probably pull them out and re-lube them before shooting!).

Well, wish me luck! Five down, one to go!!!

That sounds like a good plan...!

I don't know if your problem is caused by rust or some other form of corrosion; but I read in Brownell's Gunsmith Kinks volume 1 years ago that some gunsmiths soak a rusted screw with Coca Cola to help break it free. I guess the phosphoric acid dissolves rust (That ought to make you feel good the next time you drink one). I've never tried it nor have I known anyone who has but it is, like i said, mentioned in a small paragraph in Gunsmith Kinks. Good luck.

I have used coca cola on rusted lug nuts on an old car that I couldn't budge with a 30" breaker bar. Poured come on the and went for lunch. An hour later I could get them off.

While I understand the problem you allude too I have to ask how you found this out! For you to mention this I have to guess that you have first hand experience with the problem!

Who are you kidding Jay?!?!

I recall a picture of your extensive blackpowder revolver collection from a few years back...

You'll need more that a couple, as you have more nipples than a sorority house!

YK,

I have read a test done where the usual penetrating concoctions were tested under controlled circumstances. Four or five of them, with one of them being a mix of one part automatic transmission fluid and four parts acetone.

The testers records how many foot pounds it took to loosen their rusted on bolts and the ATF/acetone won by a clear margin.

I've used it and it works as advertised.

I think I may have to go with this next. It's been soaking in Kroil for the last week, but every time I've tried it again its still stuck rock solid. I actually damaged the new nipple wrench that took care of the other two stuck nipples! :x Going to try again this weejend and then try the automatic transmission fluid/acetone mixture. I'm beginning to suspect it is more than just corrosion that is causing this. If this doesn't work, I'll probably have to go to a professional... :(

YK,
I have used Evaporust from Harbor Freight with great success but it will take the blue off. It needs to be heated to work well. The nipples probably ruined anyway as the flash hole is through a very thin portion next to the powder. When this rusts out the nipple is dangerous as pieces of cap fly around and even the hammer can be damaged.

The strange thing is that the two that were stuck, and that I finally got out, did not show any signs of rust or damage. Hoping that is the case with this last stubborn one.
