My lab Daily needs your thoughts...UPDATED May 11, 2014

Post by mod71alaska »

"Daily" my wonderful 7 1/2 yo English Lab had a needle biopsy the results of which show she has a malignant tumor. She's having surgery tomorrow morning to give her her best chance: Stage 1 and she's home free; stage 2 probably; stage 3 or 4 and her life will be cut short. She otherwise is in excellent health and still plays and retrieves in the snow with the energy and enthusiasm of a young puppy! Right now she's asleep in her favorite place under my desk on my foot. I try not to worry until all the facts are presented. When I allow myself to think about the possibility of loosing her I choke up. I've put down retrievers before; it's never easy. She's my trusting and loyal companion. She greets me in the morning with my slippers, gets my slippers/shoes/boots when I ask her to, when I say "job" she looks around and picks up from the floor whatever I need (from keys to screwdrivers to pieces of paper) and she never loses her dummy in the snow on a retrieve! She's just a great dog; most of us have known them! Your good thoughts for her in surgery tomorrow would be appreciated. I don't want to loose her. Thank you from both of us.

Gives me a lump just reading your post. I have a yellow lab! (a soul mate) He is laying at my feet as I type this.
Strong prayers sent that Daily has good news and the very best outcome.
If the news is bad, I know you will fight the fight with her and be there for her as she will worry about you being ok. She will fight hard.
When it becomes too much for her you will be there and do for her what you need to do.
Dog is just a name, these wonderful creatures are Gods gift to man and women and they are without doubt at least to me what the words love, devotion, absolute friend means.

God bless that lovely lab and your family!

Will keep prayers up Victor.

Definitely in prayers for Daily. I am blessed to have had time with her, walking in the woods and snow with her, throwing her dummy and felt her love returned. I am honored to pray for you both. She is one very special piece of heaven on earth. Blessings in all things.

Daily is back home now asleep under my desk on my foot again. She seems to have come through her surgery fine. She was happy and wagging her tail when she went in with the tech for her surgery, and was wagging her tail when she came out of post-op. I didn't do so well myself. The "dam broke" when I left her at the vet's. During that hour drive home I thought of each of you sharing your thoughts, prayers and concern for us, and I felt your collective strong hand. You are like good hunting/fishing partners who are neighbors and friends, too. I can't thank you enough! The vet called last night to check on Daily. He told me the cancer looked encapsulated, he did a wide margin, and he was optimistic. The pathology will come back next week. I'll let you know when I know.

Daily sends happy "tail wags" to each of you!

Victor,
Great news! Daily is too young to cross the line.

Well, beings that you are in a good mood I have something to tell you. I had the Marlin (you know which Marlin) propped up in the corner of my gun room and some time last week, one of our male Yorkies must have cranked up his rear leg mighty high because the bluing is gone from the receiver and pitted so deep that light shines from the other side. Don't worry about it as I'll just slap some Silly Putty in the holes and paint it satin black. :D -----6

UPDATE: 5/11/14

My beautiful English Lab "Daily" isn't going to make it. The cancer she had surgery for in February suddenly is spreading fast. Yesterday my vet said she "probably has 2-3 months, but it could be 2-3 weeks." Today, Daily still is her happy and playful self. We will remain side by side as wonderful companions until the end, which will be much too soon. Daily is only 7 1/2 yo. I am heartbroken.

Reading this brings the old moisture to my eyes.
I am so very very sorry.
How you get through it, no words except prayers sent.
They are part of the soul and Labs and their masters there is just something that goes to the outer limits.
The are just like your children. All you can do is be there and love her.
What a beautiful girl she is. Again very sorry and if even a miracle could happen let it be for her.

Who has a dog that has not experienced this sorrow at their passing? Such a person would be no friend of mine. Most dogs are all the best that God can offer in this world and what a sad excuse for a human being is he that would not be heartbroken at losing such a friend. I truly feel for you and my prayers go out for all the best that can be for Dailey.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Man, I hate to hear that Victor. Give her the best time she can have for the time she has. I've done this several times, knowing their time was limited. I let them have as much fun as they could have while they felt good. It's one of the hardest things to do, but enjoy the time you have as best you can.

Prayers for peace, strength, and good times.

Just checked into the board and saw the post again about Daisy.
Victor I am so sorry you will be losing your special companion. It is never easy losing such a good friend and loving dog in your life. I know it is hard on you and your wife, but you should reflect on the totally great times you all have had together.
Unfortunately we never can predict the life spans of our loving pets.
We are near to the point of having to put down our Pearl, a 120 # black Airedale, I cry most every nite thinking about doing this to her.
But I keep putting it off since she wakes me up every morning licking my face as I have been sleeping in bed. Then to top it all off she acts as if nothing is wrong, but can't move sometimes.
Victor, keep loving Daisy

Please accept my best thoughts for her - my heart goes out to her, you & your family.

Dogs are often closer to their owner than the owner's kid(s) - why they're "man's best friend".

How did she make out, Victor ?

Hey buddy, we are with ya my man.

I have often wondered why our God has given our pets a short life and it has taken me a lifetime to figure it out.

The pain our pets would experience if we passed before them would be greater than the pain we endure when they pass. They have served us unconditional loyalty and it's only fitting we deal with the grief.

Let Daily live out her life in your home. It's all she knows. She does not deserve the fear that comes with artificial life ending techniques that seems to be so common today. In a dogs mind, the only thing they want is to be with you.

Feeling your pain. So sorry your good friend is terminal. I remember loosing our last pet. He lay on my wife's lap and she petted his head for hours on the last day. She finally switched places with me for a bathroom break. When she came back in the room, i was petting his head and he breathed his last. " Sharon, I think he is gone", it was heart breaking but our Blue was very sick with Cancer.

I lost a great dog recently. I feel your pain, and I wish I could help. A friend gave me a puppy, and I didn't think I was ready. The puppy, a black mouth cur we named Balto, is not a replacement for the other dog, but he is a member of the family now. He is permanently happy and loves people. He has helped. The pain of the loss is still there, but it is lessened by the newest member of the family making his own place. You don't forget a great dog, but a great dog would want you to find some happiness to lessen the pain.
