your favorite 30-06 loads.....

Post by RIHMFIRE »

today was completely dedicated to shooting and reloading research...
and the three most commons word i read today were
"OUT OF STOCK".....and after an hour and a half of that....
I went to breackfast....and then skeet shooting... :P
Anyway,... I was looking for 30-30 and 30-06 bullets...
found the 30-30 stuff 150s and 170s
but had no luck with -06.....
so whats your favorite -06 loads?...

Well, being the stick in the rut kind of guy I am, I'm partial to 54.0 grs of Win 760 under a Speer 150gr pointy soft point bullet.
This load comes straight out of the now defunct Winchester load data pamphlets.

52.0 grs of 4064 with a 150 gr - should be good for 2900 approx. - 1" or less in the three I have used it in.

150 gr. Nosler with 47 gr. IMR4895. This is my Garand load, so it's pretty mild but very accurate.

Close to my favorite.
46 Gr IMR 4895 with a 165 Gr Sierra. From my Grandad's '03 Sporter I get 3/4" groups at 100 yds. and excellent accuracy from my Garand and '95 SRC but the Springfield rules.

I also like the load that Joe Miller uses:

150 gr Remington PSP, 54.0 gr W760, WLR primer, Winchester brass, OAL = 3.195". Don't know velocity but is very accurate (at least consistent) in my two sporters; SC 03-A3 (1943) and SA 1903 (1928).
My 03-A3 avg 3/4-1" (scoped), my 1903 avg 1-1/2" (Lyman rec sight) at 100 +/- yards.

I think the rifles might do better, not sure that I can.

Cheap-o Remington 180 Cor-Loks. Under 20 a box, and shoots into an inch or so at 100 yards. I don't plink with the '06. I'm happy.

I've never been able to replicate it but the factory load that shoots best in my 03-A3 is PMC 180 gr SP. I've tried several 180 gr loads and so far can't match it.

Western Super-X cases, Winchester large rifle primers, 47 grains of IMR-4064, Sierra 180 grain spitzer flat base soft point bullets, OAL=3.325". Average muzzle velocity = 2654 fps. Average five shot group at 100 yards = 1 1/8" from the bench. Rifle was a sporterized 1917 Eddystone Enfield with a 22" barrel and a Leupold 2X-7X scope.

52 grains of IMR-4350 with the rest of same as above worked well too.

My Browning Hi-Wall 1885 anyway single shot likes 47 grains of 4895 behind a 165 grain Sierra boat tail soft point. 1 in 14 twist you know so won't group 180s very well but the 165s shoot into 1 to 1.5 inches.

H4350, Winchester WLR primers, and 165 grain Sierra Matchking bullets. It puts 3 shots in one ragged hole at 100 yards from PillHer's Rem 700 SPS with her Weaver scope.

RIHMFIRE - If you're wanting to know about favorite recommended .30-06 loads and are interested in LOTS of info re: re-loading '06, may I suggest you check out the following thread with 35 pages of discussion for reloading the classic cartridge. The thread was generated from an article by John Barsness (MuleDeer) in an issue of Handloader magazine. I believe Barsness to be a very knowledgeable, experienced gun writer and have confidence in his offerings. http://24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ub ... /3036381/1.

My personal favorite is one Barsness recommended in another Handloader article. If I remember correctly it was entitled, "The Load". My favorite load is 165 grain (Hornady Interlock) with a charge of AA’s XMR4350 found within 57-59 grains. You should do as I did and try several different amounts in that range, varying upward in .5 grain increments until finding a dramatic best. For my rifle, an older left hand Rem 700, a load towards the upper end proved to be very, very accurate and with velocity exceeding 2,900 fps when chronographed. It also proved to be one the most accurate load of any bullet weight ever developed for that old rifle of mine. Interestingly, that velocity is very close to my chronographed velocity for the Hornady 165 grain "light magnum" '06 loads sold commercially. No excess pressure signs of any type have been noted for this load in my rifle.

Hope this helps - GoatGuy

Any powder from 4895 to 4831 will often work fine depends on the velocity you want.

Here are the loads I found best using 168hpbt honady bullets and winchester large rifle primers, with bullets just off the lands. Winchester brass
IMR4064....48 grains good for 7/10ths groups
WIN760.....51 grains good for 1/2'' groups
IMR4350....51 just about an inch.

All the above through Mauser 98 with Adams Bennet 1-10 sporter barrel. 5 shot and even ten shot groups sometimes .......if I dont get the jitters.

Nosler 180 grain partition, 60 grains H-4831SC, Remington brass, Federal standard primers. Chronos 2720 fps 10 feet from muzzle. Five shot 1 1/4" at 100 yards out of an 03 Springfield original 4 groove barrel serial # 808xxx. Knocks elk for a loop.
Happy Trails!

OK, just to be different:

9.5gns of "Blue Dot" under a 165gn plain base cast bullet.

Shoots under an inch for five shots at 50yds.
