Marlin 1895GS 45-70/ Wild West Magnum

Post by Jarhead »

This is one fine rifle :!: And can kill anything that walks the face of the Earth :) However, it makes an excellent deer rifle too. I found that it does less meat damage than a .243, 308, 06, etc and beleive me!, they don't go anywhere after they are hit :!: I bought an Alaska Guide Model a few years back from Wild West Guns out of Anchorage. If you haven't heard of this.....here's the info: You can check them out at Wild West Guns Web Site.

It shoots the 45-70 too!

THE .457 WILD WEST MAGNUM

After over five years of building Co-Pilots, experimenting with loads and hunting in Alaska, we came to the conclusion that the 45-70, no matter what the load, just didn't have the extra power needed for reliable field use on Dangerous Game. It didn't take a stroke of genius for us to know what to do...after all, most new cartridges are just recycled and modernized variations of the rounds dreamed up by the gun gurus of the 20th century. But it did take new powders, custom bullets and hour after hour of tinkering, trimming, measuring, phone calls and shooting to get them right.

Although long 45 caliber rimmed cartridges are nothing new (ie: the 45-90), the trick for us was to achieve the right balance of case length and case capacity to enable us to achieve the highest possible consistent velocities with reliable feeding and still allow the use of standard 45-70. This last point meant that we could not use a belted case, nor could we use a shouldered case, since neither will allow use of the 45-70 Gov't. Too long of a case would not be optimal in a short, fast handling lever gun. We firmly believe in the old adage that anything can be built...the difficulty, however, is to make whatever is built work consistently, under the most adverse conditions. Finally, after all of our efforts, we found the optimum case legnth that would allow maximum velocity at the lowest pressure.

Once the case was designed, we turned to the bullets. Because the best dangerous game load is a deep penetrating bullet that violently expands while maintaining it's weight we rejected the use of cast bullets or thin jacketed slugs that would either not expand, or would not hold their weight. With the cooperation of Alaska Bullet Works, the makers of the world famous premium Kodiak Bullets, we developed a heavy jacketed 45 caliber slug that combines awesome shocking power, deep penetration, maximum expansion and consistant weight retention.

It works! After all is said and done, the .457 Wild West Magnum is firing a 350 grain premium Kodiak "Bear" Bullet at 2200 fps for maximum shocking power and 405 grainers at 2000! IT'S THE HOTTEST 45 CALIBER CARTRIDGE CHAMBERED IN A LEVER GUN!

And it performs! How about FORTY INCHES of penetration at 100 yards into a trophy brown bear expanding to .70? Or a shoulder to shoulder shot through a moose with the slug expanding to .90? These recovered slugs demonstrate once and for all that a premium quality jacketed bullet driven at maximum velocity is the ultimate dangerous game cartridge.
