OT - Made a trade of sorts today !

Post by 6pt-sika »

Traded a little something and added a SMALL amount of cash for a circa 1985 Remington 700BDL Varmint Special in 222 REM with a 6-18x Redfield on top !

The gun has a trigger that needs some work ! The lowest weight it'll go is 4 pounds so I'm gonna do a spring job on it and see if I can get it down to 1 1/2 pounds . I think this will make me a fun bench gun !

We shall see how it shoots in the next couple weeks !

If it isn't a tack driver it'll go to the Baltimore Gunshow and I got it right enough that I should be able to keep the Refield and make enough to cover the cost of the entire package and make a few dollars on top of that

Sweet!!!

Mine (a Rem 700 Classic, also a Triple Deuce) now has a Timney Trigger adjusted to 2# even. With a full charge of Benchmark under a 40 grain Hornady VMax bullet, she'll do an honest 3,400 fps and shoot 5-shot groups like this:
Rem700 222 - 5 @ 100 yds (med).jpg
PM me if you want more load info, and I'll check my files.

Just a small dose of IMR 4198 and a 50 gr. Sierra/Hornady and your in business. Like .308's, I have never seen a bad shootin' triple duece.

The Redfield is a real classic. :D ----------Sixgun

I've got a Remington 722 in 222 that my maternal grandfather purchased new in 1958 that really likes the Hornady 50 grain SX with IMR4198 .

I wanna see what this one will do with the Nosler 40 BT , the Hornady 35 V MAX and a couple of the light Berger bullets .

I am thinking that is a late 70's early 80's Redfield !

The gun came from a friend who is very trustworthy . And he told me he bought the scope and rifle new about 1983 to 1985 . So I am assuming the scope was made a year or two before that . Anyway I bought the whole thing more to acquire that scope then anything else . And at the price I got it for I should have no problem recouping my investment with the scope removed if the need arises . And in all actuality maybe even make $100 or so !

Well couldn't get the trigger in this gun to set at any less then 3 pounds !

So a friend brought me another Remington take off trigger and it's a nice CREEP FREE 1 1/2 pounds !

But the pice de resistancee another friend brought me a Shilen trigger for next to nothing !

So that'll go in there tommorrow !

Just hope this one will go down to a pound and the safety still works !

The guy I got it from bought it new and brought me the original box of ammo he bought with the rifle plus the only other box he ever bought for the gun !
I got 26 rounds of factory ammo with the gun , so he only fired it 14 times !

We shall find out tommorrow !

I don't have any extra brass for the 222 right now and I don't wanna use any of what I have for the 722-222 so I'm gonna shoot up some older factory stuff I have tommorrow and then maybe try some handloads in it thursday !

Well I got to the range around 10AM today .

Checked the 700 222 at 50 yards with facory REM ammo from the 80's and was dead on . Then I tacked up targets for this rifle and 4 others at the 100 yard target stands and drove all my junk back to the 100 yard benchs !

Shot the little 222 from 100 yards with old Remington factory and 3 shots were at an inch !
Tried some old Federal factory and they shot 3 in 3/4" . I also had a OLD OLD box of Hornady ammo from the mid 80's of which I was never a big fan . Anyway I figured I'd try it as well ! Shot three 3 shot groups at 100 yards with the old Honrady factory ammo and the aggregate of the 3 was about .6" at 100 yards !

I was pretty happy with myself and anticipating what it might do with handloaded Berger's or Nosler's .
I then needed to go by a friends gunshop to pick up a couple small items . As I talked with him I mentioned the 700BDL Varmint that was out in my truck and he asked me to let him see it !

I then told him I had purchased it purely for the scope but was now happy with the way it seemed to want to shoot . And he proceeded to make me an offer !

His offer was a good bit better then what I had tied up in the whole thing with me keeping the scope !

So as you can well imagine it is NO LONGER in my possesion :!:

I am thinking the proceeds from this 700 may go towards ANOTHER 444 Marlin

The scopes gonna go on a Ruger #1B in 257 Roberts we've owned for about 4 years and never fired yet !

In hind sight one of the best guns I have ever owned was a Remington 700 ADL, in 22-250, I wish I would have kept that one, you may just regret letting that one get away...but then again you never owned it long enough to really get to know it.

You may be correct but this is the third 700BDL Varmint I've owned in 222 and all three were tack drivers ! This thing was getting the job done today with 25 year old factory ammo !

It kinda reminds me of a Ruger 77MK-II VT I had in the then new 204 Ruger and another Ruger 77 MK-II VT I had in 6mm PPC !

They all shot so well and easily I lost intrest as there was nothing to do with them !
