OT - Here kitty, kitty, kitty

Post by kimwcook »

My wife sent these pictures to me today. A freind of hers sent them to her. The friend lives about 25-30 miles from us and the pictures were taken nine miles from her house. A cow was found killed and the trail cam was put in place to see what was preying on it. Our weather has been so weird that tracks won't stay long. I counted up to eight cats in one of the pictures. Who'd ever heard of eight cougars at a kill site. They're acting more like a pride of lions than the solitary cougars they normally are. Two years ago had a kid less than a mile from my house changing irrigation water spot a cougar less than 50 yds. away just sitting there watching him. It wasn't scared, it just sat on it's honches and watched him. I've got to go get my license and go cat hunting. How cool would it be to call in a cougar and get it with a '73 in 38-40.

Man, I'd like to have a license for Mountain Lion and my Model 92. It would be even more fun with a group of folks from this site. Pick any 7 and I'd be happy to be there hunting those big kitties with them.

Kim, that a uncommon sight as old mature toms wont tolerate each other, probably this is a family affair of a female and her brood over 2-3 years, the largest group Ive seen together was a female her two adult 2yr olds and 2 yearlings and I had to deal with them for stock predation. I have seen a female with 4 kittens. danny

Wow! 8 cougars in one bunch. I would have bet that never happened: shows what I know!

Someone hit one on the highway about 3 miles east of here last night. Apparently staggered off into a housing area nearby and a deputy finished it off. There seem to be plenty of cats in our area, too. I've tried calling but never had one show up (that I knew of, anyway :D )

Anyone have good advice on calling these critters? From the way our deer and elk populations are down and staying down, and also from the number of cat kills I and my friends have found the last few years, I'd say it is our patriotic duty to thin them down just a bit if we can figure out how to do it (the soviet-socialist state of Orygone outlawed chasing them with dogs, which stupidity has sent the cat population rapidly northward and the deer and elk population southward)

That is indeed exciting! I have never seen any photos with that many cougars together.

As for hunting them - What do they taste like?

Well of course they taste like chicken with a nutty flavor and a peppery finish. :)

Back when I was a young teenager (eat anything and lots of it!) a lion hunter killed a cat on our ranch in Arizona. Gave us a nice batch of loin chops in appreciation. Dad wouldn't eat them, was going to feed them to the dogs. Mom thought they looked an awful lot like pork chops and cooked them up.

They were, in my fond recollection, like the finest of pork chops. And I have read that the mountain men considered cougar to be fine eating, also. So I intend to make use of the meat if I can figure out how to get a shot at one.

Fantastic pictures! I would enjoy looking at more, if you have any. How close to a house is that orchard? I don't think that I would let my dogs out at night.

Those are undoubtedly the best pictures I have ever seen on any forum. Thanks for posting them. I can not even imagine how excited the person with the trail camera was when he first saw those pictures. How often has anyone ever seen that many together at one time?? Tom.

Louis and Clark reported in their journals that cougar was the best eating they had on their entire trip.
Fantastic photos! I've seen a couple of them here in northeast OK in the last two years. My middle son has some video of a female with two cubs near his home.

JDF: I've cooked up a couple of cougars over the years. The meat is lean and light in color (like white meat on a chicken's breast), thus partly accounting for their limited endurance. When cooked in a crockpot with onions, garlic and a bit of salt it's pretty good. I fed a bunch of it to folks who didn't know what it was, all liked it and most identified it as pork and a few said turkey. I've also roasted it for sandwiches and it was good. Bobcat (in my more limited experience) tastes (and looks) similar. The bobcat that I cooked had a real strong (catty) smell while being cooked.

First you've got to get one before you can cook it though. I wonder if that series of photos has been "cooked" in any way. Seems like a lot of cougars to be hanging out together. I'm a bit skeptical.

I've had cougar loin too. I can't say it was the best meat I've ever had. Maybe it was the way I prepared it, I grilled it, but I wasn't very impressed by the flavor.

Edit: By the way, good luck with the hunt.

Hi guys, just got back from teaching a reserve class. I can't attest to the fact the pictures haven't been cooked, but I would stand up for the person who sent them to my wife. She's an older woman and has no reason to lie about it. I know it's hard to believe. As I stated I've never heard of that many cougars around a kill before and I'd like to see them myself. I'll believe it until I know better.

I guess they found out was preying on the cattle... man oh man.

I just watched the film "Where the Red Fern Growns" sniff sniff.... it featured a couple of mountain lions - both solitary. ;)

Several months ago someone had e-mailed around a trail cam photo of four of them at a water tank near Bradley ( East of Paso Robles , CA ). I was amazed then but WOW!
