OT- tagging deer

Post by Rusty »

I know in a lot of states when you buy your hunting license you get actual tags that have to be filled out and attached to the deer. The animal is then taken to a check station where the kill is recorded. Here in Fla. the only check that is made is if you are hunting in a management area. On private land there is no check at all.
I was wondering how many states have a check system vs. nothing at all for private land?

Thanks.

We have transportation tags that must be attached immediately after the kill. Up until a few years ago the animal had to be taken to a check station. Now we can check them in on the phone or internet.

this was the last year in ohio for needing to take the deer to a designated check station. they are moving toward a call in system (finally) like kentucky next year. you still have to tag it to move it.

Deer must be tagged here, no check stations. Your tags are the license and the upper portion also serves as a small game/predator license even after the tag portion is used. My wife & I often peel & put this on the antlers to show that the head is legal after the rest is cut up. This is not necessary but we purchase a combination license that covers all (including fishing) but big game early in the year so we don't need it for anything else.

In Washington, you attach a transport tag to the carcass immediately, but you aren't required to check it unless you happen to pass by a check station on the way home. After the season ends, you have to submit an online report to the DFW telling them the results of your hunt.

In most of Arizona deer/elk must just be tagged and can be taken home or to a meat locker directly. A notable exception is the North Kaibab area where all deer MUST be taken through the check station. Where I hunt in Montana I have never been checked by a warden; there are several "roadblock-type" stations where all hunters traveling the highway are directed to pull over to have their game checked to allow biologists to collect data on age, sex, condition, etc.

In NY State the carcass tag must be filled out immediately after the deer is killed but need not be attached to the carcass until you reach a point of transportation. We need to report all deer kills by phone or on the Internet.

Wisconsin: attach completed tag immediately and get to a check station before the DNR can fine you for not being there fifteen minutes before you downed the critter.

We now call it in or check it in on the computer. Used to use the tags.

In Texas, it seems like we're supposed to put the tag on it before it hits the ground. The tag has to be filled out with the land owner's name and such, so it can't be done ahead of time. We don't have to call anybody or check it anywhere, but if a game warden stops by, the tag had better be filled out right and attached to the carcass.

Here in Wy the carcass coupon (tag) is a part of the license that you are to sign, date and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. You may remove the tag from the carcass when transporting , but the tag is to be in the possesion of the person doing the transporting.
There used to be permanent check stations around that if you went past you needed to stop at going and coming from the hunt. Now they run check's attended by wardens and biologists where they put out signs and all licensed hunters are required to stop at and they check your license, and animal etc.
If you don't run across a check station there's no requirement to find one.
Game wardens and biologist do prowl the game processing plants checking tags , animals etc.

They do send out survey's after the season closes they want you to fill out.

My main point in this question is that in other states it seems that you folks have ways of tagging your game and a penalty if you don't. This helps the state record the number of animals taken. Here we have nothing. :(

In Kansas, we are supposed to fill out the tag and attach it to the deer soon after it is shot. It is supposed to be attched to the deer when taken in for processing.

In Maryland its one of the least hasslesome requirements of our usually draconian central system. You are required as before mentioned, to place a tag or facimile on the carcass before it drops to the ground( rather sporting), then you have 24hr to log it either via phone or internet. A confirmation number is then issued which must accompany the carcass to processing or to further transport. Landowners use facsimile tags, licensed hunters use preprinted provided in the lavish hunting regulation brochure.

Same as Oregon.
Cut the day and month of the kill out of the tag and affix to the carcass.
Go online or on the phone, whether you filled your tag or not.

In my province (Quebec) attach tag once on the ground and max of 48 hrs after leaving hunting area stop at a check in station and register. When you register they ask where (using a tropographic map) when,(day and time) and weapon used. (rifle, bow, cross bow, muzzle loader etc) Some stations remove teeth to age etc. this must be done for deer, moose, caribou, bear and turkey. This is supposed to help determine seasons , but we have had the worst harvest lately and they give the seasons out 2 years in advance,
