I like the '73/'76 look myself. The '86 is a pretty close second.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but, I'm inclined to believe no one here has every seen a Winchester 95 Hi Grade 30-06 - it's in a class by itself, IMO.

Image

Image

It shoots even better than it looks - this target was the one I used for my initial zeroing of sights at 100 yards - having zeroed to POA at 25 yards -to hit 2" above POA - not "bench rest" but "fist rest" on range table on the 100 yard range - shots were 1/2" apart - I was having a good day -

Image

Solo shots were off hand after I shot those two in the center 2" above POA. This was what my wife gave me for our 25th anniversary nearly 7 years ago - OK, so I did "help" her find it - we husbands are obligated to help out wives any way we can -

Well, I don't know, I like them all, 94's, 71's, 92's, 86's, etc. It has to be a Winchester, though, as I just think they are generally the best looking.

1886 Winchester, followed by it's "baby brother" the 1892, and third would be the "stepchild' and after thought, the Model 71. The 336/1895(?) doesn't come close, it's like comparing apples to onions.

Generally a Marlin man but for the looks....... a '73 or '86 gets my vote, with the '95 being right in there.

For me, each model has it's special quirks that I like. Of the models I've shot I like the '94 best with the '92 next in line. Of the guns I've owned I really like the Hi-grade Browning '95. I sold my Hi-grade Browning in 30-06 because I knew I'd never shoot anything that looked that pretty. Eventually I'll get a standard grade that I can shoot. Then I'll decide if I like to shoot it as well as I liked looking at the Browning.

For me, Winchester 73 and 76 (reverse the order, depending on the day), Winchester 92, Winchester 86, Winchester 94, in that order.

Of course, one should have at least one of each, just to be sure.

In this order; 66 carbine, 73 carbine, 92 carbine, 94 carbine. Absolutely HATE repeat HATE the look of a 92 with a long octagon barrel...Makes the action look puny and undersized.... 86s are great machines but he nod goes to the 71 derivatives as far as looks go...Now the one that really makes the old ticker go pitter patter here lately is a Savage 99 H model.. That’s the one with a 20 inch barrel, carbine butt plate, and a barrel band fore arm..

The '86, especially the later ones are one and the same as the 71 that followed. 71s would be a lot handsomer if they didn't have the "infected" front end wood. I'm thinking of tradin' the forend on mine with one from an '86 to see the improvement. Ditto for the Model 64.

Winchesters -- the 86, 92, 94, 73, 95, and to my eye, the very best looking, though not a magazine gun, the Winchester Single-Shot (1885), the most elegant of the single-shot rifles.

86's and the 71. Next the 92's. I love the pistol grip, 2/3's magazine look. I recently saw a pre WWII 94 with a shotgun butt, pistol grip, full magazine under a 26" octagonal barrel, in .38-55 that was just beautiful.

I must admit I really like pistol gripped levers with a button magazines. Must have been strongly influenced years ago, by Paul Newmans, half magazined 73, in the movie Hombre.

I too love the looks of my early Marlin 336A's. I slim down the forearms.

I will be the Lone Wolf on this Topic Savage 99 in any form.
I just like them. + the Cals they came in are light years ahead of the comp.
In a way I group my levers in Classic, IE 92,36/336, 94 and 86/71and the good looking 64 the winner in that class is the 92,but 64 is close
In modern, It's the 99 the BLR too skinny the 88s I have Seen all had nasty ugly wood. I have only seen one Finwolf in my life and ya it was nice.
The ugly goes to the 95 yet the cals are good.
But as long as you can hit what your shooting at really who cares. :D

71/1886 do it for me too. I shoot Marlins a lot and like them but they are just not as easy on the eyes. I also have a few Savage 99's that I think are pretty neat in their own way as is the 88 Winchester that I have, but still I think the 71 is what gets my heart rate up the fastest.

I like the '73 with extra length barrel. Say 28" or 30". The Iron Henry runs a close second...and if we were to include single shots...the 1885 is a beautiful rifle in itself.

For me it's more about type than a particular model. I prefer a Winchester levergun (or copy) that has a checkered, pistol grip stock with crescent buttplate and octagon barrel. Kind of like this one:

I've always thought the 94 Win. looked "right:" moreso than other levers. But I kind of like the slight modern twist on a classic theme, which is why I like the Big Bore configuration best: beefed up side walls, thicker barrel and in 356 Win. It's always looked right in every way, except the accursed frankenstein neck bolt, which is an abomination. I pretend it's not there.

Image

A close second would also be the new Big Horn Armory carbine with the full length mag tube. Again, just love a little modern twist on a classic/proven design.

http://www.bighornarmory.com/products/carbine.php

Though maybe they aren't repeating levers in the sense that Winchesters/Marlins are, the Sharps and Spencer designs have to be among the most gorgeous lever operated rifles of the Civil War/Old West era, hands down.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

I've long been partial to thin frame 1881 Marlin. The light version of the Colt Burgess is pretty nice too, but the standard weight version is rather chunky.
