OT- Opinions on the 6.5 Creedmoor

At heart I'm a levergunner and love my MArlin 30-30. Outside of leverguns though I'm a so called 7mm geek. However as much as I like the 7mm I also like the 6.5 calibers, especially the 6.5x55. I just wish this cartridge was more popular here in the U.S. I have been paying close attention to the 6.5 Creedmoor as I feel it has lot going for it. At the moment only ruger offers a rifle chambered for this cartridge I hope other companies will offer this chambering in their rifles as well, namely Savage (ammo companies as well). I hope the 6.5 Creedmoor can revive interest in 6.5 caliber cartridges in the U.S. I was looking at Hornady's web site and you can get bullet weights from 95gr -160gr and that is just one company. The caliber certanily offers a lot of versatilty to the hunter. So what do the rest of you think about this new cartridge?

I don't see it going anywhere. There are already too many 6.5's, splitting a market that is too small.

6.5 Grendel will continue but not bloom, to service the AR market, competing against the 6.8.

260 will increase, easy to make and fits standard bolt faces. It does everything the Creedmoor does, although the Creedmoor is a better design. 260 will kill the Creedmoor.

6.5x55 will stagger along for a while for nostalgia's sake, but it's got too many negatives to do much this side of the pond.

6.5x47 Lapua is a favorite of mine, but I don't see it going anywhere. It and the Creedmoor will compete in a very tiny sliver of the market devoted to competitions. At least the Lapua has European 300m competitions, Creedmoor doesn't even have that.

6.5 TCU, 6.5 JDJ, 6.5 Rem Mag, etc., all fading...

It may be one of the contenders for 'the best' accurate-but-potent cartridge, but let's face it - how many of 'us' can shoot well enough to appreciate the difference? I sure can't.

So, give me a stock heavy-barrel .223 Rem, .308 Win, or 280 Rem, and I'll be happy, and won't miss my target any farther than if I'd been using a 6.5 Creedmoor out of a rail-gun...

OTOH for the folks who truly are that good - more power to 'em - keep developing that cutting-edge stuff! Eventually it trickles down to the rest of us.

Personally, I prefer a gun with a commonly available chambering so I'm not so desparate for brass I have to stock up a lifetime supply in case it gets obsolete.

THAT WAS THE YEAR I GOT A CUSTOM 264WINMAG THAT'LL SHOOT 6.5MM 120gr BULLETS AT 3400FPS SLICK AS YOU PLEASE AND FLATTER THAN A MOON BEAM.
THE 140gr BULLETS CAN BE PUSHED TO 3100FPS IF YOU LIKE, NO PROBLEM ATALL.
IT'LL TAKE 85gr BULLETS UP TILL THEY BLOW IN FLIGHT AND 100gr BULLETS CAN BE PUSHED TO 3800FPS FOR WHATEVER THAT MIGHT BE WORTH. I DO KNOW I SHOT GROUNDHOGS SO FAR AWAY YOU BETTER TAKE A SANDWICH AND EXTRA WATER WHEN YOU GO TO EXAMINE THE CORPUS DILECTI.
AFTER THIS, THE SMALLER 6.5'S LOST THEIR APPEAL AND I PERSONALLY WENT WITH THE 257 CALIBER RIFLES IN THAT RANGE.

A medium bore (.25-.30 cal) built by Mr Ackley in his hey-day is on the short list of rifles I would like to have but don't have a "need" for.

Of note, the 6.5 Creedmoor is one of the calibers that Hornady is producing in their new Superformance™ brand ammunition in both a 120grn GMX and 129grn SST bullet. 3,000fps! Now that's Performance!!

No problem! I'm thinking about a 6.5 barrel of some flavor for that 7-08 Stevens I picked up and found that while looking for info on the .260 Rem. From what I've found, the .260 is pretty much a short action 6.5x55. So far, me likey!

No, these were the Stevens 200s Academy had on sale just before Christmas for $199.

Apparently they bought a bunch for "Black Friday" and they weren't moving fast enough. Rumor has it they will do it again in Jan if the stores still have a stockpile of them. My local store had six 7-08s when I called that morning and still had five when I left that afternoon with mine.
