Re: VIETNAM VET DAY
Ray, 16 knots, that's it ? I would have guessed twice that at least. Yep, the sailors on the corvettes had balls for sure. It must have been a bear to stay warm (and somewhat dry) running the North Atlantic on those ships. My first can (John R Craig DD-885) was a Gehring Class, had been "framme...

My Marlin 30-30 CB handles and shoots the same as your Model 64. Lovely rifles, wished I would have picked up the same configuration in 38/55 when they were still reasonably priced.

Re: VIETNAM VET DAY
A late neighbor served in the Canadian Navy --1940-1945, and assigned to the HMCS Chilliwack, a corvette, on the North Atlantic convoy runs. He claimed a destroyer was like a cruise ship compared to much smaller corvettes. When one looks at the old corvette classes of escorts, I'd agree with him, e...

I worked at a shipyard in the mid 70’s. We refitted the USS Henderson, a Gearing class. Some of us were able to go on the post refit acceptance trials. One heck of a ride when at full speed in very small seas. In larger seas they weren’t for the faint of heart or those prone to seasickness. I’d tak...

My ship (USS Hoel, DDG-13) was a Charles Adams class guided missile destroyer, built in 1962. Much nicer than my first destroyer, the J.R. Craig DD885.

Flying home after my second tour (1974) to SE Asia, I was walking through Twin Cities Int'l in my dress whites to catch a small connector flight to LaCrosse (WI) and some gal came up to me and called me a baby killer. A sign of these times.

A serendipitous thread for sure. In the past I enjoyed a sip of good whiskey or brandy, occasionally a shot of schnapps, but I no longer partake or consume any alcohol. To each, their own.... Mark Twain also said, "God didn't create anything in vain, but the fly comes pretty close" ....so ...

A good friend was a Wildlife Biologist with WDNR here and dealt with our black bears quite a bit. Spring is when the mother bears kick out the previous year's cub as she has new cubs to care for. My buddy put it like this, "the older cubs are basically like our teenagers. Imagine a bunch of tee...

I remember nuclear bomb shelters on display (for sale) back in 1962 during and after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Re: How to support Ukraine Directly
Back in the early 70's the U.S. always had a US Navy ship anchored in Kaoshiung harbor (in Taiwan) in case the Chinese ever attacked Taiwan. I was told this was (and maybe still is) done so that any attack by Communist China would likely hit our ship, thus giving the U S. the needed leverage to shoo...

Do you have winter diesel in your tractor or standard off road diesel ? It sounds like your diesel has gelled up in your injectors. Here in WI (all over the Upper Midwest), all of the co-ops and oil companies mix a "winter blend" of about 20% gasoline with 80% diesel. I use this blend excl...

FWIW, the Williams Firesight really lights up. I had one on my Marlin 30-30 CB. It gets damaged real easy, so be careful with leaning the rifle against anything.
