Thanks for the update. FWIW, 4759 is not noted for fine performance in the .30-30. My best results over a wide range of conditions have been w/RE-7, 3031, 4320 and 5744. I read & know guys that swear by BL/C(2) & 748. 4064 is also a good powder for this caliber. If I may, IMR SR-4759 : "...

Two holes on the tang a half inch apart? That doesnt sound right for the normal tang sights used on lever guns, there should be one hole just behind the hammer, and the rear tang sight mounting hole is the stock screw. Yea, you know, someone not interested in aesthetics, just make what ya got, fit!...

My favorite load is 2F Goex to w/in ¼" of the case mouth, hold rim against the bolt of my vibratory clener (while it's running), to settle the charge, press in a waxed card wad, then seat a boolit cast from a RCBS FN-325-U sized to .458 and lubed w/SPG. SERIOUS medicine, good for 300 yds.

No tang safety on the Browning 1886s, sounds like someone had a tang sight. Stiff could be just needs a thorough cleaning and lite lube, but ain't sure what you mean about the lifter? On Winchesters, the carrier rises at the forward end of the stroke.
