Joe nailed it. In this day and age, no manufacturer would produce a firearm if it will not tolerate a steady diet of SAAMI-spec factory loads. Don't know why this sort of thing comes up so often and in regards to several different guns.

I definitely would not do it. Those brass frames just aren't strong enough. Check out the new Remington 1858 cartridge conversions from Cimarron. They're also available as a convertible with both .45Colt and .44 percussion cylinders.

To me the 24" Deluxe Sporting Rifle is the most pleasing to the eye and handles the best. Velocity usually peaks between 18" and 20", even using slow magnum powders not suitable for the `73.

Ruger also did a run of .32H&R/.32-20 and .38-40/.40S&W convertibles on the original large frame Vaquero a few years back.

While I prefer a Remington 700 type safety, the three position works fine for me as well. I don't manipulate ANY safety with game in sight without doing so carefully to prevent noise. Just flicking it off with the thumb is inviting a spook.

Those auctions are surprising, especially the used one. When people ask for pricing on these at RugerForum they're usually quoted $500-$550 for the .38-40 and $600-$650 for the .32-20.
