Kind of a long shot here, (levergun pun!), but you might check to see if the cartridge guide spring is catching and hanging up the fired case. It is the flat spring above the chamber that guides the cartridge into the chamber. If they get bent down they can catch. Happened to me about 6 months ago....

OK, I finally looked it up the back of the Blue Book. Wards was Western Field. Almost all made by Mossberg, Savage & Stevens.

Other stores with "store brand" guns included Coast to Coast, Gambles, J.C. Penny.

I still have a brick of Montgomery Ward's .22 shells, must have had them since the 1970's at least. Wards and Sears not only had their own ammo brands but sold firearms with their name brands as well. Remember J.C. Higgins store brand shotguns sold at Sears? It does it with an empty case, so I dont think it's the bullet. It does it with brand new cases or resized ones. The cases are about .012 under max.

OK, fellers, I have closely examined this rifle again for all the potential problems you have outlined. I am convinced it is just the extractor riding up over the rim of the case. I guess maybe it will get better if he just shoots it a lot. :D

I have a saddle ring carbine 25-35 with a Lyman tang sight. I use it for prairie dogs with the 60 grain Hornady. Really smokes 'em, great splatter factor. :D
