That's a sharp looking rifle as well. Townsend Whelen did a ton of wilderness hunting with a 30-40 Krag high wall.

I imagine that OAL concerns are why you don't see a 3" 410 levergun. Not worth making a dedicated action for a low volume product.

I would be inclined to get one of the wonderful designs from Tom at Accurate Molds then send it to Erik at Hollow Point Mold, he will do any style you want. Both are great to deal with.

Nope, no wad or fillers. I do tip the muzzle up before each shot though. The numbers aren't great, 40-50 fps spread as I recall, was one of the first loads I chronographed about 10 years ago but I had a fire a couple years back in which I lost most of my notes. That said it is good for about 2"...

The Cast Bullet Association has a couple of military classes, but all are benchrest. Still fun and the postal matches are something to do on those early mornings at the range.

Both of my 1895s will cycle the Lyman collar button fine. Tom at Accurate has some interesting lightweight bullets that may suit you as well. My favorite smokeless load for the collar button is 8 grs of Unique. Also like black with a .5" wad and .125" of compression on whatever the charge ...

Hopefully they will expand the side gate Big Boy offerings to include more traditional models. A steel framed 41 Mag with a loading gate and walnut would make me a real happy camper. I'll pass on the current offering but see it as a step in the right direction.

I carry full charge wadcutters in the little Colt Agent that lives in my pocket. I know from shooting game and livestock that they hit hard for a 38 special load. I use the old SEACO double ended wadcutters and I am not at all concerned about carrying handloads.

Very nice find. I've been shooting a pair of 16s this season for everything that flies. A Belgian Browning A5 with a polychoke and my grandad's old H&R. Having larger sizes of bismuth available has been great.

Nice find on the Merwin and Hulbert. My grandad's friend had a Pocket Army when I was a kid and it was so finely fitted that when you pulled it apart to drop the empties you feel a slight suction trying to draw it back together. Have you shot it yet?

My favorite is an old Winchester 1890, fun to shoot and a joy to carry in the squirrel woods.
Best is probably a CZ 452 American left hand. Thing is very well made and shoots like a bench rifle with good ammo. Absolutely the most accurate sporter weight rifle I've ever owned.

OK....who wants a 35 Winchester Model 1895?.....I got a nice one here that's the scarce takedown with the scarce shotgun butt with the even rarer hard rubber butt plate. Bright shiney bore.....solid rifle.....excellent shooter with jacketed or cast.....solid 70% gun. $3200...more than fair....comes...

Agree on the 35 Winchester. Ken Waters had one made up on a Browning, think it was just a rebored 30-40 Krag. He did a write up on it in one of his Pet Loads columns.

I have an old Remington 14 and have had great success with the Lee 358-200-RF gr bullet. It is a knock off of a RCBS design. If you would like to try it I'd be happy to send some your way.

For a working farm gun, 4 5/8" is the only choice for me. For a dedicated hunting gun I'll pack anything up to a 10 1/2" Ruger Maximum as long as I have a proper rig for it.

That is really cool.

I got one for my little cousin on his 16th birthday and he hunted deer, coyotes, and bear with it exclusively for the next 15 years or so stacking up a big pile of dead critters. They are handy and certainly get the job done.

Very cool project, always though that would be a cool one. When the Browning '95s came out Ken Waters had a 30-40 Krag rebored to 35 caliber, not sure it it was a 35 Krag or a true 35 Winchester but either way I though it was about the coolest thing going.

I prefer a short barreled Smith 19 on the belt or an old Colt Agent with a hammer shroud slipped in my pocket, often both. That said, I recently installed a trigger kit on a Smith M&P 45 Compact for shooting buddy and it handles wonderfully. It is light and points very naturally for me.

Give RE7 or BL-C(2) a try. Both meter much better than the stick IMR powders, which improves accuracy a bunch! My max load with 150 grain flat nose gas-checked cast bullets and RE7 is about half the size of the same velocity using 3031. Reloader 7 has become my go to powder for full power cast load...

Just a hint to those who use -- or would, but can't find -- products like the Imperial wax. Plain ol' Johnson's Paste Wax, found in supermarkets everywhere, works just as well, costs a bunch less, and one can is virtually a lifetime supply. No knock against Imperial, but as a dyed-in-the-wool cheap...

On my MP mold once you get the pins hot bullets fall out by gravity or at most a gentle tap. Erik at Hollowpoont Mold will convert molds to the same Cramer style hollowpoint pin that Miha uses or his own "inset bar" style which looks like a winner. He also does the Lyman style. Erik does e...
