Re: OT - help pick bolt action caliber

Well, you didn't say what you would be shooting with it or if you handload or not. You probably already know that ,on average, the .308 will be slightly slower than the 30-06, and the RSAUM, WSM, or RCM will be slightly faster. In factory ammo, .308 will be less expensive and have more variety and a...

Re: Okay.....LEAST favorite cartridge

I'm kind of cartridge fanatic and tend to appreciate them for what they are. But there are some I have absolutely no interest in. 30 carbine: Why? Couldn't the Armed Forces chamber those handy carbines in something else? .45 ACP, 38 Super, even 9mm? Anything grossly overbore. 7mm STW and .300-.378 W...

Re: Movie - Unforgiven

I love this movie and have watched it many times. But, I cringe everytime I hear the 30-30 line. This movie took so much care in showing a variety of period firearms, but blew such an easy thing to reference. Besides the line is pointless to the story and is spoken by a forgettable character. No exc...

Re: OT - Mice in attic, solution?

I don't about the 12 shot that the .22's use, but 9 shot out of a CCI 44 shotshell is not sheetrock friendly. I put a Vaquero to use against a mouse in my garage about a year and a half ago.

Re: OT- Adios to Speer components

I agree that one should stock more components than they need immediately. But, there are shooters who have just gotten into handloading recently, mainly due to escalating ammo prices since the rise of metal costs long before the current President was elected. Also sometimes we get new gun and need d...

Re: Levergun goofs in the movies....

In "Unforgiven" one of Little Bill's lawmen mention the unavailabity of 30-30 ammo. No wonder it is unavailable, the movie is set in the early 1880's, as evidenced by English Bob's discussion of the shooting of President Garfield. I love this movie, but that line really irks me everytime I...

Re: OT: How do I tighten a snap?

If you rather not do it yourself, shoe repair shops will replace the snap for very little money. I had the snap on my Buck sheath replaced and a belt seam retied all for $7.

I'm not into camo jobs on such guns but, it looks a lot better than I had imagined. Plus it knocked off a lot of $$$ from the price tag. Congratulations on a great find.

Re: bad day with a .243

Unfortunately, unless you find the deer, we will never know how well or how badly the deer was shot. I'm not a fan of the 6mm's for big game, but I can not blame it in this case for lack of evidence. We will probably never know if a bigger bullet would have made a difference. I know anyone can claim...

Re: Loose Dogs

You know, the fact that there are such regional differences is one of the truly great things about this country. The ability of individual states to reflect the customs, needs and economics of the region is so much better than blanket laws for the whole country, except for those concerning basic rig...

Re: Loose Dogs

Wes, I really don't think we disagree much on this issue. We both think that killing a dog that is a legitimate and ongoing threat to property is justified. We both agree that people should try to respect others' property whether it is dogs, livestock, or land. However, there are posts on this threa...

Re: Loose Dogs

I have to say I got a bit peeved last night too. I admit that know little about about western life although I have been around cows and dogs quite a bit. From some of the posts I have read, some of us do not understand hunting with hounds, or the very nature of hounds. I will let that go without fur...

Re: Loose Dogs

I grew up in eastern NC hunting deer with hounds. I have never or heard of hounds chasing livestock while out on the hunt despite pastures being all around. However they are just dogs and it would not surprise me if one decided to chase a cow or kill a chicken. I know they do run deer through pastur...

Re: So are you tired of the new guy wth questions yet? :)

It is all personal preference. Birdshead grips feels more like slim double action grips to me. They are smaller than "plowhandle" grips and don't really allow the revolver to roll with the recoil like the original style. I know it sounds like I'm running down the birdshead, but I actually ...

Re: .44spl 240 grain XTP Expansion?

Hornady uses the 180 XTP in their 44 SPL ammo. Speer uses the 200 Gold Dot. Either of these are probably the way to go for expansion. If you want to stay with a heavier bullet the lead HP's mentioned above will work and you get 200 for about the same price as 100 jacketed.

Re: Ithaca lever action shotgun

I still have the one I got as a kid. I never thought there would ever be that much interest in it. The kid down the road had one too. His was a hand-me-down, mine was a used purchase after I outgrew my cutdown H&R. I have also seen 12 gauges. These guns definately are not rare.

Re: OT: Who Has Ruger 77/22

I have one of the first ones with the plastic buttplate. I got when I was fifteen and it is the only rimfire rifle I have ever owned. Matter of fact I killed a couple of tree-eating beavers today with it. It is very accurate with several loads. Drawbacks are a heavy trigger pull for the weight of th...
