Re: Moose Hunt Applications - levergun big game hunting
Hmmmm.... I dunno about ideal, but if I ever get picked for a moose tag here in Maine, my primary weapon is gonna be a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 41 Magnum, and my back up is gonna be my 336 in 35 Remington. Some folks might say that both are too light for moose. I don't think 30/30 is too light if yo...

I live in central Maine now, but grew up in SE PA (Furlong to be precise, Sixgun!). I spent 7 years in Boston. Most of the people there seem to be hyper-aggresive, rude, and generally nasty. I'm with Lastmoecken and marlinman93. I've shot thousands of 38 Special in my S&W 66 with 4" barrel. One year I placed 5th in the State of Maine shooting bullseye postals with that setup. Accuracy was terrific. If you're worried about lead/powder residue buildup using 38 cases, put your cle...

I use WW231 for a general pistol powder, 2400 and H110 for the magnums. 231 isn't really ideal for magnums, although it can be used for light loads. For 38 Special, 44 Special, 45ACP, most of the 9mms (maybe all!), 40 S&W, and even up to 10mm it's fine. I load more pistol ammo than rifle. H4895 ...

I have a 4" S&W Model 66 with Packmyr grips. I've carried it concealed, shot it in competition, and just plinked around with it. It shoots everything from 38 target loads to 357s more accurately than I can. Great trigger. It might be a little bit light for black bear if you were out hunting...

I think that one of the advantages of the 44 Special, like the GI 45, is that even if
the bullet does not expand, you're still makin' a pretty good-sized hole in whatever you're
hitting. And at 1300 fps, it seems penetration would be adequate, expansion of the projectile
or not.

The 41 Magnum is a terrific revolver cartridge, but never gets any attention. The 35 Remington will do 95% of the big game jobs in the lower 48 for 95% of the rifelmen out there, yet it doesn't get a lot of respect, either. Same with the 32 Special as some others have noted. -Stretch
