I have two rifles in .405 Winchester chambering. The Model 95 and 1885. The Hornady factory ammo shooting OK...Recoil not bad...a 405 grain 45/70 from a Winchester 1886 EL rocks you ,ore than the .405 in either of the above.

Greetings from the tundra Gabby! Welcome to the forum. As for a book to recommend, Phil Sharpe wrote a pretty good one a couple of years back. It was published by Funk & Wagnalls Company. Most of the data is a bit dated, but, it does cover many of the older cartridges that you find in leverguns....

It kinda has the look of the Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle from a few years back. I like it. Plus, with the cold weather trigger guard that you can get a gloved hand into, a guy ought to be able to hunt snowsnakes!

You may want to forget the .36 and go for the .44 Walker. If a squirrel senses fear or peanut butter on your breath he WILL charge for certain and then leave you to be picked over by the the crows and buzzards.
