OT- Rant about my new home...

Sorry guys, I just gotta vent. I moved out of L.A Dec. 1, 2009 to southern Oregon hoping to retire and find some shooting orented things to do; like shoot my levergun and handguns and perhaps expand my lever gun collection. I bought a nice Marlin .22 for my wife and last week I saw a 1911 I liked an...

Most reasons have already been given, but, I reload because it's fun. I started out of curiosity using a Lee Loader, and cost is way down on the list of reasons for me. Another fact is the versatility of handloading. I can make ammo that is'nt available commercially. I can load my .44s all the way f...

Casting and shooting lead boolits is more than just a money saver. I cast boolits because it's fun. I haven't saved any money yet (been casting for about 6 - 7 years) 'cause I buy molds, lead (wheel weights are no longer free), alloy stuff, lube, and lots of other stuff I "need" to make bo...

Re: hand-cast lead BOOLITTS !?

Your gunsmith doesn't know much about cast boolits! I routinely run plain base cast lead bullets to around 1100 fps w/no leading. Proper bullet fit and a decient lube will allow magnum velocities using cast lead (wheel weight alloy) boolits.

A couple fellers touched on bullet fit. A cast bullet that is undersized will lead the barrels regardless of how "hard" it is when driven at magnum velocities. Proper fit (.002" over bore size, or so), and a decient lube are necessary for magnum loads. Can't do that with Hornady or Sp...
